Holding DVC Contracts at multiple resorts?

I've seen in a few places that it appears one can purchase points at multiple home resorts. I've gathered that they are two different contracts, however from what I can tell it's possible to use points from one at the other?

For example,

If we were to purchase a 200 pt contract at SSR, and a seperate say 50 point contract at Bay Lake, we would be able to consider Bay Lake a home resort, and use the 200 its from the SSR contract?

I think I understand it in theory, but the mechanics of it are confusing. We will be buying something in the next few months, but I want to make sure I understand this particular option before taking the plunge. The idea of that flexibility is appealing, but also confusing.

The term "home resort" refers to the points you bought, and not to your overall membership. If you buy 50 points at BLT then the home resort for those points is BLT. If you buy 200 points at SSR then the home resort for those points is SSR. Home resort points can be used at their home resort 11 months from your date of arrival. They can be used at any other resort 7 months from your date of arrival. Did this clear things up or just make it worse?

no.

you'd have 50 BLT pts and 200 SSR pts. so for booking BLT at 11 months out, you'd only have access to the pts from the BLT contract...it would be as if you didn't have the SSR contract.

you could combine pts (assuming they are under the same member number) at 7 months ONLY.

So, basically, in that same example, I couldn't book with all 250 points at BLT at the 11-month mark, I'd only be able to book with the 50 (plus banked/borrowed BLT points). If I wanted to use all 250, I'd have to wait for the 7-month mark at either, since the points are split between the two home resorts?

Follow-up: If I'm right on that mechanic, It kinda negates the point of having the smaller number of points at the higher-cost/pp resort in order to get that as a "home". So if that's the case, what are some other reasons people do multiple home resorts? for rental?

I understand the use year - and we're taking that into account if we buy multiple home resorts. There are a few contracts that all have same-month use year we're looking at if we do the double-up, so that part I think I'm clear on. But yeah, I can see how that would make things crazy!

For a lot of people, yes it does negate the advantage. But a lot of small contracts are add ons, meaning that the buyer has added on to a larger contract at the same home resort. Also, some people buy what they can afford. And 50 BLT points can get you a week in a standard view studio every other year. A 50 point contract for a week at BLT is not a bad deal, all things considered.

You also need to consider banking and borrowing. For example, if I have 150 pts @ BLT and 150 pts @ AKV, then I can bank and/or borrow each year and have 300 pts @ BLT every other year and 300 pts @ AKV every other year tand all 300 pts at each resort will have the 11 month home resort advantage.

This question comes up a couple of times per week. You need to buy points at the resort that you want to book at 11 months. Buying at a less expensive resort like SSR gets you an 11 month booking advantage at that resort. SSR usually has short booking availability where the more popular smaller resorts don't.

We have 100 points at AKV and 50 points at HHI. This way, with banking and borrowing, we can use 150 points at AKV to go every 2 years and 50 points at HHI to go every three years. Our stays are typically 5 nights and generally do not include the weekends so 150 points gets us a 1BR almost any time of year. This year, we are using 157 points (all 150 of our available HHI and 7 AKV points) to stay 5 nights in a 2BR at HHI for spring break.
