For those that didn't read the story, New Orleans wants to build a new cruise port just a bit south of the French Quarter part of the city. In order to justify the expenditure, they need to have ships committed to using it. I'm sure that all the other cruise lines we also solicited.

One of the main issues all cruise lines have with New Orleans is the long trip down the Mississippi River to the Gulf. It would be much quicker to sail out from Lake Pontchartrain. I realize the lake is shallow, but getting more cruise lines here is a good reason to dredge and make it "friendly" for large ships.

I've seen a lot of posts from people concerned that New Orleans isn't too friendly for kids. While at some level that may be true, there are plenty of kid-friendly activities in and around the city. There are swamp tours that can be reached in about a 20 minute drive from the city as well. People could stay in Jefferson Parish, which is technically where the airport is located, anyway. Jefferson Parish is much more family friendly than Orleans parish. Orleans parish can be avoided until it's time to board the ship for those concerned with safety. Just a thought.

Never assume malice for what ignorance can explain.

If they can't sell cruises from Galveston, I'm not sure New Orleans is going to be much better. I guess NO adds Alabama and Mississippi within driving distance to the port, but they aren't that far from Port Canaveral either.

No offense to Galveston, but New Orleans is a bigger tourist destination in general. It is also centrally located. It's a 5 hour drive from cities in Texas to Fla. It's much closer to the Fla panhandle than PC. With that said, I dont actually want DCL to come here.
