I second Traverse City - sadly I've only been to Sleeping Bear once back in 8th grade. I really need to go back.

Wondering if you have any Michigan beach suggestions...I promise not to give away any insider secrets you might be willing to share.
Closer drive for you, I'd recommend Silver Beach in St. Joe or Van Buren State Park near South Haven.

I've lived here 8 years and had no idea Michigan had such beautiful beaches. I guess my hesitation is this:

DH is not a lover of the beach generally; he finds it too hot, and is not a fan of huge crowds. I am hoping he would like your beaches more since the water is cool, and the weather has the potential to not be so sweltering, depending on the day.

So we could do a SW beach on a day or weekend trip, and it sounds like they are pretty enough....

Trying to decide if the Traverse/Sleeping Bear/Mackinac areas are SO beautiful that they are worth the extra drive time/money etc. I am thinking if there are fewer people DH might enjoy those more for that reason.

So anyway that is kind of rambling but if anyone cares to weigh in I would truly appreciate it and sorry again for crashing your thread. I just figured all the experts are already in one place.

Sleeping Bear Dunes IMO is not to be missed. Also relatively close to there is the small town of Frankfort with a lovely beach also -- in the general Traverse City region. TC is nice, but generally wall-to-wall people. We prefer a lot of the other towns in that area.

I would not say our water is "cool" so much as "cold". Of all those mentioned I would also suggest Sleeping Bear Dunes, but go there for the hiking, not the beach sitting or swimming.

I love the metalwork in your sig link, very nice. My son loves working with metal and is teaching himself to weld and cut. I've got him working on a custom piece in our high school football logo/colors right now for my front yard.

This thread has sure been quiet lately! How is everyone enjoying fall?
