Passport Cards for Vancouver to L.A. Cruise?

I've been doing research on the passport cards but I just want to make sure I have this correct. As long as we cross into Canada by land (amtrak, shuttle, bus, crawl) we may use the passport cards and not a real (expensive) passport? We may board the ship with these as well? We're only heading back to L.A. after a stop in San Francisco so there are no other foreign ports. It would cost us $700 - $800 for passports, I believe since we are a family of 6. If we choose to get passports, we may have to push our cruise from 9/13 to 5/14. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

As long as there is no air travel involved and you remain within the Western Hemisphere, you may travel with Passport Cards. And the Passport Card is a "real" passport, jut not acceptable for air travel or outside the Western Hemisphere.

From GetYouHome.gov:

U.S. Passport Card This is a limited-use international travel document valid for entry into the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda, per the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. It is not valid for international air travel.
