OK, here's an out-of-left-field question.

I know the porters at San Pedro are not DCL employees, is it the same at PC?

I read a recent trip report (on another board) and the person said that the porters at PC were DCL employees. I was just wondering if that had changed.

I wanted to be sure that what I was posting was correct.

Not sure how recent that post was, but we talked to our porter in mid-December at PC and they do not work for DCL, but for an agency that DCL contracts with.

The report was just posted today for a Jan 31 cruise.

We got off the Fantasy on February 2nd and didn't see anything different in the porters that would indicate a different employer.

As far as I know, none of the porters at any port work for DCL. They are all employed by an outside agency.

The porters at PC dress more like CM's so that may be what is confusing. They wear printed brown shirts and shorts, and look 'disney-ish'. They are also very friendly and there are a lot of them in the luggage area to help you through customs.

At Miami? Not so much. They were wearing dark clothing like you'd see any loading dock people wearing, sort of like a mechanic. They weren't that helpful outside, and on disembarking I only saw a few in the terminal. Not Disney-like.

The same is now true of the valets at WDW resorts. They used to be Disney CM's, but now work for an outside agency, even though they still wear CM name tags and costumes and are expected to act like real CMs to guests. The reason for this is that by doing so, Disney can avoid having to pay for standard benefits that are provided to full-time CMs, such as health care.

The change over to contract valets happened a couple of years ago now.

Just to be clear, they are not "independent contractors" in the true sense - they are employees of a non-Disney company that contracts with Disney to provide porter services.

Yes, the contracting firm is paid by Disney for its services based on their contract. The firm then pays their own employees. That is a contractor, although not an independent contractor - an independent contractor would most likely receive a paycheck directly from Disney and it is up to them to arrange their own tax payments, insurance, etc. I think it would be unusual for DCL to hire something like porters as independent contractors.

The differences between contractors/independent contractors/employees is usually relevant for legal and/or tax reasons but it's not easy to grasp if you're not looking at it that way.
