I'm sort of wondering the same thing, but for a teen instead of a younger child. My fifteen year old has been to about 10 sessions, and other than a little time with us after the first one, we've not talked to the counselor at all. I'm starting to wonder what's up.

I can understand that with a teen there are privacy and trust issues. OTOH, dd can be quite the drama queen and has a way of twisting the truth. I wonder how well counselors can shift through the snow job, as I've never had any personal experience.

Just an update... did switch to a child clinical psychologist and wow, what a difference!! Learned you should follow your instincts. Feeling some hope this new guy can help us out.

Pigeon--- if the are 14 or older, then they are not allowed to tell you anything the child said. You should get some update on the plan of care though. That is one thing that I loved about this new guy, he actually told us his plan of care... and he was stunned that the old therapist did not do this.

It can be called "Informed consent" - EVERY psychologist involved in treatment in EVERY state is require to do it! Glad you found a better fit. (Some shouldn't be practicing.)

Thanks....so glad to have a fresh start. I agree some of the therpists should not be practicing....... when I told him our old therapist was teaching our daughter to halt her anxiety/panic attacks with humor, think about an exaggerated funny story she can tell later. He was like, "what???" ... and I said, yep, 'it is in her notes!

To coin a phrase, that is crazy!

My 16yodd does square breathing and visualization.

The goal though is to get to a place so you do not have panic attacks (or lessen them for basic stuff). It does take a long while and does require discipline to get yourself together.

My dd is the quintessential perfectionist. Takes on hard classes and has trouble keeping things organized to stay on top of the work. It is not that the material is hard, she has trouble focusing on task because there is a lot to do. Can't stand crowds but can give a speech perfectly & loves it.
Passes out with medical procedures.

When my dd starts pacing I know that her anxiety is up big time.

I am happy that you have decided to continue to help your child. Anxiety is something that is for life and learning how to manage it successfully while attaining your goals is what we are striving for here.

OMG you should see me when I'm driving
I'm pretty sure the minute I open my mouth no one would have to ask the question

My daughter saw a therapist for a few months last year (16 years old). She always went in alone. Once or twice the therapist would meet with me first, then DD. And once she met with both of us. Wow was that an eye opener. She also recommended I see her separately which was such a blessing. It gave her a better idea of why I felt the way I did, and why DD felt the way she did. It started out as DD's anxiety and wound up about so much more than that. It helped us learn to communicate more effectively and it was nice to have an unbiased opinion tell me what I could be doing better.

I would definitely be talking to the therapist before or at the next appointment and having your questions/concerned answered.

Just an update.... new psychologist is GREAT!! Answers his phone, I can email him for advice, is doing real therapy with her and after 3 sessions, I can already see progress. So glad I trusted my instincts and switched to someone new.
