Osteoporosis and running?

Hi all!

Today I found out that I have osteoporosis (I guess that explains why I got a couple of stress fractures...)

Of course I will ask my doctors this ... but do you think I can run again?

I'm reading that weight bearing exercise, including running, is actually good for osteoporosis. but I have to see. Do any of you have experience with this? Or perhaps some of you have osteoporosis and run?

Thanks!

I can not address your Osteoporosis question but I will ask, Why is it so important that you RUN?

I just completed, at 62.5yo, my 3rd Dopey without running because at this point in time my knees will not allow the additional pounding running imparts. I think you might find that Chi Walking can be a very soft way to exercise and if you really put your heart into training, a 10mpm pace could very well be possible. It might not be the 6mpm to 8mpm pace you might really want as a runner but it sure beats the heck out of using crutches or a knee scooter because of fractures.

Good luck.

Hi John VN,

thanks for your response and also for your question. For whatever reasons I want to run, I want to do it only if it I am healthy and not hurting myself ... that being said, I think I want to do as you suggest and WALK!! I hope I can get as much satisfaction from walking.

My extended family (many are runners) and I have already been planning a trip to WDW for the 2014 marathon weekend. I have already informed them that i may WALK the Goofy ... if I can train properly.

Hi WaDiWo,

Yes, you can walk or run with osteoporosis. I have a strong family history of osteoporosis and was diagnosed with osteopenia (beginning stages of osteoporosis) many years ago. My doctor is very supportive of my walking and we both feel that my walking has been one of the reasons that my osteopenia has not progressed into osteoporosis. Of course you should talk it over with your doctor first, but I wouldn’t let osteoporosis stop you from doing goofy. I’m planning on doing goofy in 2014 as well. Let’s show everyone that you can have a bone disease and still do goofy!

Thank you drummerwife, for your motivation and uplifting support. I know there are worse things to have than osteoporosis, and there are many who are dealing with a lot more serious issues, but not being able to run is affecting me right now ... selfish perhaps, but I really want to join my family for the Goofy next year.
