Anyone been recently? The Legendary Kon Tiki Sightseeing and Beach Cruise

Hi all, we are trying to see if there have been any recent cruisers who did this excursion (The Legendary Kon Tiki Sightseeing and Beach Cruise) in St. Thomas. We have a 7 and 4 year old and were going to do Coral World but now think we would rather do something that includes the beach in the excursion (it looks like this includes Honeymoon Beach). Thoughts about it if you've done it? Would you do it again? Good for kids too?

I cannot comment on The Legendary Kon Tiki Sightseeing and Beach Cruise, but I can tell you what we did on St.Thomas.

We took a taxi to Corral World with beach gear in tow. We visited everything at CW, took cute pictures, ate cheese burgers & fries then walked 100 feet to Coki Beach. We used a locker at CW and were allowed in and out to use their restrooms and they have showers! We caught a taxi back. It was great.

AND - on another cruise to St. Thomas (with Carnival) we took a taxi to Redhook, ferry to Cruz Bay St., John, taxi to Trunk Bay (cheese burgers and fries again) and had an amazing time!! St. John is Heaven on Earth.
Trunk Bay

Studying all the options on St. Thomas resulted in another 7 night stay on St. Thomas at Secret Harbour Beach Resort - another possible destination for a day trip! Swam with a sea turtle every afternoon!

Wow Melanie those are amazing pictures! I want to do St. John beaches but we are a little worried about the time there and back and not using a Disney excursion. There are some snorkeling ones but our 4.5 yr old (3 mths shy of 5) can't do a lot of the Disney sponsored ones. How long does it take to get back to St. Thomas from St. John on the ferry?

You need to have a plan - be organized and get off the ship as early as possible. MANY MANY MANY people do the trek to St. John on their own from every cruise ship that comes into St. T (and that is a lot) everyday.

The moment you step off the boat you will be directed to taxis who will take you. They are fun - open air- truck vans (covered). You say "Four people to the ferry at Red Hook" and they point you in the direction. Have cash in small bills (1s, 5s, 10s, and 20s) ready. I used a credit card at the gift shop at Trunk Bay. They drop you at the ferry dock. You buy your tickets and board the ferry with a hundred other cruise ship passengers. When we got off at Cruz Bay one time we walked around and shopped for a while then took a taxi to Trunk Bay or there are taxis waiting to take you right from the end of the ferry dock. There is a 24-7 live web cam at the dock in Cruz Bay that you can check out for yourself. http://www.stjohnspice.com/spicecam/

It is a lot of travel time BUT you see a lot when you are traveling.

The Coral World - Coki Beach trip would be less travel time IF YOU think you'll get another chance to see St. John. A lot of others on here would poo poo Trunk Bay as too many tourists. BUT you're on a tight schedule.

In the early morning the ferrys run every half hour but mid morning through the afternoon they run every hour - 30 mins each way. Just know the time for the return ferry and allow an hour from Trunk Bay for insurance and an hour from Red Hook back. We had real nice relaxed days all three times and still got back with extra time to shop at Havensight.

Thanks Do the beaches have restrooms and dining facilities easily accessible? Honeymoon Beach in particular or Trunk Bay?

We did the Kontiki excursion last Sept. Don't know if we just hit an off week or what but I wouldn't do it again. The crew were nice enough and did try to play some games with the children on the way back but otherwise it was boring. Beach we went to was nice and there was a decent bathroom on the boat ..... And they brought us back way early.

Thanks Edith, that's what I'm worried about. I really don't want to listen to "are we there yet are we there yet" for the entire excursion Going to Trunk Bay on our own sounds much more relaxing, as Melanie suggested. Any other opinions are still appreciated! I'm leaning toward canceling the scheduled excursion though.

When we went to Coki (twice) we used the restrooms at Coral World and got food there too.

Trunk Bay is part of the U.S. National Park. It has a pretty nice bathhouse/restroom that we used both trips. (washed off the salt water and put on dry clothes.) They have a snack shack that sells burgers and fries. The line can get real long and slow. They sell frozen tropical drinks & smoothies. They have a fairly nice gift shop that also has cold drinks and snacks. I think they rent snorkel gear too. We had our own. ( - just saying! )

Insider tip an expat from Florida told us when we were there for a week - wet towels are a pain to carry - air dry!! Doesn't take long. OR consider taking an old towel and leaving it behind.

Hi there

I agree with the above, we recently just came off the Fantasy. The Kon Tiki people were very nice but one hour on the beach is not worth the $49/pp ($200+ for 4 people with tips). They sail (motor) to honeymoon beach where they do have a nice mom and pop operation for burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, drinks, etc.. on the beach. The burgers came with macaroni salad and fries, close to $40.00 for 4 burgers, they were huge, but you had to wait a while for the food. So that takes up about 20 minutes of your time, then just a little over 30 min for the beach. They do have a bathroom on the boat that you can use while on the beach.
Good luck with your decision and enjoy the cruise!
