For all you cruise veterens: ? About a decemebr cruise

Hi there!! We are planning our third DCL cruise this year. We are currently booked on a 4 night out of Miami in early nov, but I am considering the December 4th cruise. I really got caught up in all the pics I saw of the Christmas decorations. The only disadvantage is taking the kids out of school for a few days... Any thoughts? I'd really love to hear from those who went in December! Thanks!!

That's why December is low season at both WDW and the cruise line...most families can't pull kids out at this time.

Things to consider--when does their semester end? Are they going to be in heavy duty testing the last week before break? How old are they (little kids, it won't matter if they are good students). Another thought--unless they are testing, the week before Christmas break is mostly wasted in many school systems. Have you thought about pulling them that week?

we did a 7 day cruise leaving Dec 4th. (Magic 2010)

the ship was decorated completely, huge Christmas tree in the lobby. Gingerbread house in the one lounge. CC was decorated too. it even snows at CC when you are going back on the ship in the afternoon.

The water was way too cold for me in St Thomas/Maarten and at CC, but the kids and dh went in. The air was warm. We were able to swim on the ship no problems.

We cruised the fantasy the week before christmas. For my kids that was the last week of the semester. But we arranged it ahead of time and my daughter was able to finish all of her tests early. My son missed one exam, but still I would do it again.

Yes castaway was beautifully decorated, the gingerbread house and Christmas tree on the ship were amazing. And the characters in holiday sweaters were really cute. I want to cruise Christmas week this year. I'm looking at the wonder out of Galveston. It will be a lot more expensive than what we paid for the December 15 cruise, but I want to experience Christmas at sea.

We cruised on the Dream the first week of December one year. Everything is decorated and just beautiful! We went during that time because the rates are a lot cheaper. We are also homeschoolers so taking kids out of school isn't an issue for us.

Thanks so much for your responses and candor. I'm still deciding what to do. We can't go right before the holiday as my dh gets heavily involved in year end stuff with work.... I really want to do this...we shall see!

We have cruised with the Christmas decorations four times. Loved it!!!! You should know that the Magic was decorated later than usual this year for the first time.

I just did the Magic NYE cruise and don't think I am going to do a winter cruise again, only because it was too chilly going there and back. I really want warmer weather on a cruise! But that is my personal preference and many people do not feel the same way.

It was the week after Thanksgiving this year. Usually it is by the end of the second week of November. That disappointed many on the Thanksgiving cruise because they were use to the decorations being up and getting their family Christmas pictures then. It was said that it happened because Disney doesn't have a warehouse at Galveston and had to truck them in. Honestly, this isn't an excuse IMO because DCL knew this when they first planned to go there and should have made arrangements to get the trucks there in time. This may not be an issue now that all of the ships will be out of FL for a while. It shows that you can't depend on it though.

Our first 2 cruises were in that timeframe. A 3 night the first week of December (2009) and a 7 night Western the last week of November (2010).

Both times we had a blast, but the weather was not great. We loved seeing the ship and CC decorated for the holidays, but it was very windy at all times, so there was no sitting out in the sun, and the water at CC was chilly and it was windy so when you got out of the water it was even colder. On the Western, our day in Cozumel because a docked sea day because it was POURING outside and all the excursions were canceled.

We had very rough seas on the way back to PC on both trips thanks to storms that were coming up the Eastern seaboard as well.

This year, we went in September and the weather was fantastic! Warm and sunny all the time and no rain at all. Plus, we were ready to see the ship NOT decorated for Christmas!
