How far out do you book?

I know you can only do it a year out on the website- but how far out do you or can you book a trip package? I'm tempted to book a few years out for a more expensive trip than usual but want to have time to chip away at the total. Thanks.

I don't know, but I suspect that if you can't book it online, you can't book it over the phone from a timing standpoint unless you're talking about a group event or something outside of a garden variety booking (i.e., something that requires extra effort on Disney's part, like blocking off huge chunks of rooms).

You could always use a savings account to meet the same goal, though. Pick a time to go, deposit money regularly just as it you were paying down a Disney invoice, and when it's time to book, you're locked and loaded. What's more, if something should come up, you've got some flexibility.

That's a good point, I just feel like if I put it away in a savings... it will get used for something else. Plus the way my mind work "owing" something makes me pick up the OT etc that I need to do in order to do so. The website won't even let me price something beyond 365 days, I find it hard to believe that you can only make reservations up to a year ahead? But I could very well be wrong.

We plan to take all 4 kids for the first time in 2014 or 2015, so this is what we are doing:

1. Pick the time of year you plan to go and a hotel, experiences, etc. you would want to book to get an idea of the cost
2. Add about 20% for yearly price increases/unknown expenses
3. Count how many months until you leave and break it up into monthly payments to save. You can always create a separate bank account where you pay yourself monthly that is off limits (similar to a Christmas club account)

You can book a room only reservation up to 499 days in advance, but packages can only be booked through the end of this year. Sometime this summer they'll release package pricing for next year.

We are DVC members, so we book 11 months out. When we pay cash, we book about 8 - 12 months out.

You could buy Disney Gift Cards to cover the cost of your trip. It's not something that I recommend usually because it ties your money up with Disney and there's no way to get cash back if you need it for an emergency. But it would prevent you from spending the money on "something else".

To answer your first question, Disney will make a reservation 500 days in advance. They will only book room-only that far out and they do not guarantee the price for reservations that are after the publish rates and dates. To me, it only makes sense to do this if you are trying to book a reservation for a unique room (like a Presidential Suite) or if you want a specific resort during a holiday. You would need to make a room deposit equal to the current 1-night stay and it will increase once the rates for your dates are announced. You cannot do it online. You must call to make this kind of reservation.

We book at the 11-month window now that we own DVC. But I've been know to plan short last-minute trips just a couple of weeks before arrival.

We usually don't book until 6 months out but we generally know we are going at least 12 months - 18 months beforehand. Sometimes the dates change around a little. 6 months out, our dates are finalized and we book.

Thats s good suggestion but I agree with what you said. When I say spend on something else- I'm good at saving, that's not the the problem. I just feel like every time I get something extra set aside, something comes up- like replacing our oil burner . When I've got a chunk of change sitting in an account for a vacation, I can't justify financing something when I technically have the cash. It may sound odd but it's how my mind works. I guess in closing I wish I was able to book two years in advance for a package online, that way at the end of each month I can make a payment and it's done. We usually stay mod/value and really want to go deluxe next time, but it'll take longer to pay for.
