Chacchoben Mayan Ruins question!!!

We leave for our Fantasy 7 day cruise in March. DH wants to go see the ruins. Is it worth the money? We have 3 kids under the age of 10 and I hate for them not to allow my DH and I to enjoy the wonderful Mayan structures because they think it's "boring".

Opinions welcomed!

We did this excursion in October. It is about a 1 hour bus ride from the port, and several hours at the Ruins, walking around, seeing different structures, including some that you can climb on. Our tour guide was first rate and we felt we learned a lot. My two boys were 5 and 7 at the time and they didn't complain at all - they enjoyed climbing on the ruins and didn't mind the bus ride.

Your mileage may vary of course, but I'd be surprised if your kids found this "boring" - if it helps, you can always let them bring electronics or books or something on the bus ride to help keep them occupied.

My wife and I went one time, back in 2004. Our kids were 9 and 11 then and we did not take them on this excursion as we knew they would not enjoy it and therefore it was not worth the trouble or the expense.

If this is the excursion on Costa Maya (I think it is), there is a long bus ride out to the site (about 1 hour each way). It definitely felt like a foreign country. We passed several military checkpoints w/ armed guards standing by the road as well as countless impoverished villages. The tour guide kept us entertained with some stories, jokes and facts about the ruins. I had a great time and took some cool pictures. My wife thought it was too humid and hated all the mosquitos, but she is not all that interested in historical sites.

You know your own children best...if they are restless or frequently need to be actively engaged or entertained, they may be frustrated on this excursion. If they are more laid-back, they might enjoy it. I don't recall that there were very many children on our bus for that trip. (after all it was 8 years ago!) Have fun whatever you decide!

I would be interested if anybody has comments about visiting the site relative to other places like Tulum or CI.

We have been to the other two and am wondering if we would be entirely underwhelmed by the ruins there.

We went to Chacchoben when the kids were 6 & 8. Neither one of them were bored. DD6 went around repeating lots of facts that she heard from our guide, David, for months concerning how they built them and how old they are. The tour was incredible!

We went to Chacchoben in December. We had visited CI several years ago. The Chacchoben site is much smaller and we did not see any carvings like at CI. The pyramids are not as tall or elaborate. That said, we enjoyed our visit and it is a very nicely arranged site.

I was wondering if anyone thought it would be appropriate to bring a 2 year old. We already booked this but now I'm rethinking about us all going. What is the shuttle like? Are there seat belts?
