Fully booked on line!.. Availability on board?.. Eastern - Fantasy

We're booked Eastern Caribbean on the Fantasy, February and the trip we wanted to book in St Thomas is fully booked by the looks of things . It's the full day beach excursion to Honeymoon Bay.

Can anyone tell me, do spaces open up after departure?

Is there a possibility that more tours are added?

How easy is this trip to arrange if we wanted to strike out on our own?

And finally, how far from the docking area are the local ferries to the other islands if we did do our own thing?

Best wishes and dry decks to you all.

Good questions, are there any experienced cruisers who know about this? I am interested as well.

DCL does not hold back excursions in the same way that they do Palo and spa appointments. They want to sell all the slots as they have to promise the vendors a certain number. However, people do cancel--keep checking on line to see if there are openings. Also, check with the port adventures desk after boarding. There are sometimes people who want to cancel; if DCL can re-sell their slot to someone else, they will not have to pay for an excursion they don't want to do. Everyone wins.

Other thoughts--have you looked into booking this excursion privately or thru Unless DCL and/or other cruise lines have booked up all the availability, it is often possible to do the same excursions on your own. We used Shore Trips in Alaska and saved about 30% over the cruise line prices AND had smaller groups. In one case we had a private tour as we were the only family that booked thru them. As our guide explained, he was on salary, so all it cost the company was the gas to run the vehicle and everyone was happier if they didn't cancel it.

It's also pretty easy to get over to St. John on your own. We've done it with a baby and two other small children that were too young to go on the DCL excursion. Just take a taxi over to Red Hook and take the ferry over. Grab a taxi to Trunk Bay. It's my favorite. If you get there early, you beat all the cruise excursions anyway.

There's always a chance that a spot will open up on the DCL excursion, so keep checking. Or you can see if anyone on your cruise meet is trying to organize a group private tour - they tend to be less crowded, cheaper, and if you have a big enough group, also provide a modicum of insurance you won't be left if something happens. Leaving 10 people is one thing - leaving 60...
