Husband threw out his back.
So 13 days before our cruise and my husband threw out his back. I would not be so worried, but he has to drive a truck 20+ hours to Florida on Monday and then will spend 5 days down there for a conference and then has to re load the truck and make the return drive. He is scheduled to get home 4 days before we leave for our cruise. We bought the cruise insurance through DCL so if we have to cancel I believe it will be covered, but I am so worried that we will have to cancel that I want to cry.

so, so sorry.
I also live with a man with back and neck issues. He just had surgery on 12/21 and I was afraid he would miss Christmas with us, was finally released on Christmas eve. Is this something that happens often for him? My DH has a whole regimen of stretching exercises he does every morning...something like that might be helpful? I wish you all the best and hope you won't have to cancel.

I don't think the cruise would be an actual problem.....to me, the driving is what is going to hurt. Sitting in a vehicle, in one position for that long. Personally, I would be looking at getting out of the conference rather than cancelling your cruise. At least on the cruise, you can sit, walk, lay in the sun. And if you gotta take something for the back, you sleep it off in your room or in a lounger. But, the conference, Im thinking he has to be awake and alert. And sitting, again, in one position.
Just my thoughts......

Just an FYI, schedule the appointment for him NOW, so he can get in the very 1st day he is home. If they are out for the weekend, leave a message so you are one of the 1st on the call list when they get in on Monday. This way he will have time for follow-up appointments, if needed, before you go. This is especially important if he does not already have a chiropratic doc, as the doc would need extra time for him as a new patient, but regardless, set it up ASAP so he will be assured to get an appointment. Good Luck to him!

One other thing, since he will be in one place for 5 whole days next week, you should really think about getting him in to a chiropractor there to start his recovery. Then he can still see someone at home, if he needs it when he gets back for any residuals and/or any damage he does on the way home!

Have him look for one during the conference. He can go in and get addjusted there to start his relief. It takes a few times and in fact he may even feel worst at first. I worked at an office.lol Heat and stretching exercises. The insurance may cover him but since your not injured it may not cover you to cancel. Just make sure to look into this.

I agree with Chiro ASAP (going on FL may be his best bet). The more things are injured the longer it can take for things to feel better after the adjustment.

Oooh, I feel for him. I recently found out I have a herniated disk. The pain going down my leg was unbearable. I couldn't get myself in any position of sitting/standing/laying down to get relief. I couldn't even carry on a conversation, except to moan & groan & cry in pain. I only slept 2 hrs the 1st 2 days. Since then I took a round of steroids, muscle relaxers, Percocet when it was really bad but the best help of all is my 2x/week physical therapy. They gave me lots of stretching exercises. I can finally walk without limping. I'm not able to walk on my tippy toes yet but I'm working on it!
I also saw a orthopedic spine specialist who got my insurance to approve an MRI & ordered me a TENS unit (stimulator) to help reduce pain. Never again will I rake & bag leaves in the fall. Never, ever, ever.... Good luck with your dh. Get him a good lumbar support cushion for while he has to sit in the truck. I still cruised in Nov with back issues so we cancelled our jetski excursion in CC and we just took it easy, visited beaches instead. |

Oh I know the back pain story all too well...
I would try to get someone else to drive the truck down, and have your DH fly. Sitting is THE WORST. Exercises under the supervision of a Physical Therapist, heat, massage, rest, and plenty of Motrin. And definitely find someone in FL for those 5 days - great idea - the hotel can probably recommend someone (or online...).GOOD LUCK!

I would call Allianz (the insurance company for DCL's policies) and find out what their requirements are for cancelling and getting reimbursed. There are very specific timeframes in regards to when the problem started, when he goes to the doctor, when you actually cancel, etc, in order to qualify for reimbursement. If you unfortunately do have to cancel, you don't want to miss out on your insurance coverage because you didn't time things correctly (although you would still get a future cruise credit since you bought the DCL insurance).
