I'm about 16 hours and would totally do it if I had someone to drive with me! I wish it was only 12 hours. Sadly my family thinks I'm off the rocker with my Disney obsession so they wouldn't. I say go for it and have a fabulous time (I'd let your son skip Tuesday though too ).

I wouldn't. Our drive is about the same, and we've done it many times. We wouldn't drive for less than 5 days at WDW.

Hi! We are in Richmond, too, so have done the 12 hour drive many times.

Would the idea be crazy? Yes....
But would I be tempted to try it? Maybe....
I would look at it as one of those "crazy" things you do once just to say you did it. Could be fun.
On the other hand, with a five- year-old, I would be wary of doing it. It seems like something I would do with just another adult. I think with a small child, alot more "buffer"time is helpful- a few hours here and there to play with- take a break/nap/ playtime.

DH and I are just going for 4 days at the end of January- but we are flying for the first time. We were lucky and got a direct flight, so we will get there quickly.

We are about 10-11 hours away and I wouldn't do it. I'm a huge Disney fan and I am always plotting to go back, but for me, the driving is just too tiring to only stay that short of a time. We typically stay for 8 days and even that doesn't seem like enough sometimes!

If you want to do it, no reason not to! So you spend a lot of time in the car and don't take a long trip. Big whup. You still have fun. Fun is good. You don't need a mathematical formula about time spent driving vs. time spent in the parks to justify fun. You don't need to justify fun at all.

I vote for fun.

We drive 9 hours and go for just one full day. We leave after work friday night. Go to the parks Saturday and drive home Sunday. We do this once or twice a year in addition to a few longer trips. It is a great way get a dose of disney magic.

We drive about 18 hours from MI and I wouldn't do it unless I could get a full week to enjoy the trip.

If we go in March it will be a leave Fri @ noon, arrive Sat, stay till following Sat, leave early that day to arrive home early on Sun. I'm still thinking flying would be great if I can find cheap flights.

We're pretty fortunate (or obsessed - take your pick) in that we go enough that we don't feel the need to do it all every time. We really just do the parks open-lunch, take a nap, and then go back out for dinner and one of the nighttime celebrations.

Thanks for all the feedback! We are going to give it a go and see how it goes. One of my neighbors drove down and hit MK for 16 hours for that MK open 24 hours day, and then drove home - and said it was one of the best trips they'd taken - so I don't feel too bad.

But what if you think math is fun? (I'm not saying I do -- I was a psych major for a reason...)

Isn't there some fun in being able to justify a long road trip for a relatively short stay? And what about those who say "getting there is half the fun"?

I vote for fun, too, but fun is where you find it.

Lol, I do think math is fun. I always really, really liked math. It's so easy and concrete. You can count on math. Math always has an answer.

I'm just saying that the OP doesn't have to justify her trip with mathematics.

And if its fun for OP to go, yay. If it isn't, that's good, too.

I'd totally do it...but I'm all about the adventure and any excuse for a Disney trip!

We were just in Disney in November, but I feel like we didn't get much park time in that trip. We had two park days, then a 3 night/4 day cruise, then 3.5 more park days. There was a lot we missed and we are EXPERTS at touring.

Since we have APs for the five of us (2 adults and 3 kids) I decided to look into a quick return trip, but one we can do on the cheap. We have a DVC membership, which means the room is free for us. I'm even going to resist making ADRs so we can maximize park time.

Our plan is to drive down from MD after the kids get out around 1pm on a Thursday. Hope to make it to southern Georgia at least that night and stopping for a hotel for one night. That way we can wake up the next morning and do the short drive to the parks. We'll stay Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday and then drive back home Tuesday. The only day of school the kids will miss will be Friday...and even that is an early dismissal day for them so they aren't missing a full school day.

Not sure how late we'll be back on Tuesday, but plan to have the kids back in school and we will go to work that Wednesday. We can always catch up on sleep later in the week!

I'm actually really looking forward to this crazy long weekend trip even with the long drive. After all, it's worth it to ME at least for a few more days in Disney!!!

Thumbs up We did it!!!

We did it! We are back and the boy went to school today and we are tired but it was a blast! So glad we went. We did so much in our 2.5 days, and it was totally worth it! We will definitely do it again. Not as much of a big deal as I thought it would be to drive. My son thankfully was an excellent traveler. It was one of the best trips we've ever taken.

We played car games for the first few hours, stopped for dinner, then partner and son watched a movie (I listened) then a quick stop for him to change to jammies and brush teeth, fill up with gas, hit the road for another few hours - I listened to Chronicles of Narnia Radio Drama in 1 earbud so I could still hear road sounds while partner napped, then partner took over for the last few hours. It was really actually very easy.

I recommend it!!

We've made a twelve hour drive overnight, gone to MK the next day (starting about noon), stayed one night in a resort, and driven home the next day. It's not something that I'd want to do with regularity, but it was a blast.

AWESOME! Sounds like a great whirlwind trip. Glad it worked out so well and you were able to get a lot done in a short time!

We leave in less than 48 hours for our long weekend trip. I cannot WAIT!!
