California Grill for a cocktail

Do they limit access to the bar at the CG?

We would like to go on December 30th - late night - to try to catch the fireworks. I'm sure we aren't the only ones.....

Yes they limit. Even during non peak times the bar is packed late evening with people waiting for tables.

We made it !

Wife and I were there in October and we went to CG ( just to catch the view). I knew late night would be insanely busy , so we went at about 5 PM. Not a problem. We had a couple of cocktails and got to enjoy the fabulous sights. Enjoyed talking with others at the bar who had done the same thing. I say " Go for it" what's the the worst that can happen? Just go early --- that may be the key. Good luck !!

3) Especially to see New Year's fireworks (MK has them on 30th and 31st).
4) They know people want to get up there for fireworks - even normal nights.
. . . many try it just for the view
. . . many try it because they can't get a dinner ADR
. . . many try it because they don't want to spend the money for a CG dinner
5) Allowing the "only drinks at the bar for fireworks", they'd be mobbed.
6) As mentioned, for drinks,
. . . you can go up very early
. . . you can go up after fireworks
. . . you can't get up within 1½-hrs of fireworks time (on 30th probably 2-2½ hrs)

They will limit access if the bar area is too full to admit any more guests. The closer you are to fireworks time, the more likely it is this will happen (for obvious reasons).

I do not know if they get more restrictive on nights when there are special holiday fireworks shows (not talking about the hard ticket parties...more like the New Years show or 4th of July) but if I really wanted to see the fireworks from the lounge I'd go up early and be prepared to hang around for the show. (You can order from the full menu if you want).
