Has anyone had any negative experiences renting DVC points? We would really like ot be in a villa next November and renting points is so much more affordable but I have never done it before. Your thoughts on renting?

Well, if you want November (like Thanksgiving) you need to book that stay now. Contact David (he's a sponsor on the DVC Boards). Just make sure you want to do that because cancellation is very difficult and usually there are no refunds.

We are looking the full week before Thanksgiving (Nov 16 - 23).
I guess what makes me worry is if the owner backs out?

We rented points twice from the same lady before becoming DVC owners. It was a great experience. No problems at all.

There have been a few scams, but for the most part members are pretty honest. Check out the sticky threads at the top of the DVC Rent/Trade Board. And check out David's site because he will fill you in on the details as well.

We have rented points on 5 occasions at least from a different owner each time and have had nothing but great experiences! I usually try to rent from someone who has a large post count on the boards as I know then they are an established dis-member . I love renting points! The only way I could afford to stay at the beach club for new years!!

Renting points is generally riskier for the owner. They will always control the reservation but are also ultimately responsible for the conduct of the renter.

Renting can be a great option but the week you are looking at is very popular for DVC members. If you are considering you should do it now before the choice properties and rooms are gone. The 11 month booking window has already opened.

I would agree with all these posts....November is a busy time but you are looking at the week after the F&W ends but the Christmas stuff begins. Depending on the resort, start looking now. As far as DVC owners, it can be a pretty good deal renting and for the most part there has to be a mutual trust. So get comfortable with the owner and see what their policies are, every member is different..ie changes, cancellations, deposits, payments, and such. Renting from David's is an option but going direct with an owner will cost a little less. Personally we've rented our points on several occasions and the people we've had all were fantastic. A few still email me every year looking for points but we bought to use them not rent them. Only one rental went south, husband lost his job, so I did refund the stay. With that being said good luck and inquire with those long time dis-members. Any questions you may have just PM me, be glad to answer them.

Renting points has saved us so much money over the last three trips. I don't think I can ever go back to regular Disney prices/rooms again! We had great experiences. Definitely something to look into!

Just read the sticky threads on the rent/trade board and know what you're getting into. Make sure everything is clearly spelled-out before you agree. I would definitely recommend asking for references.

I've rented to numerous people, several more than once, and each experience was positive. I most recently rented to someone for the second time and actaully met up with her and her family at the Magic Kingdom 2 weeks ago.

I have done it, just remember ask for references if you wish. Look for someone who has done it before. I have never paid more than 11$ a point. Anyone who asks for More than $12, is asking too much in my opinion.
It's a great way to save and it helps out owner and renter.

I rented points this past April/May from an owner on the DVC rental board. I followed the instructions/tips they give on the DVC board and it went perfectly smoothly. It was a great deal compared to what I would have paid otherwise. I paid about $100 more to stay at Kidani vs. one of the value resorts. Can't beat that. I did it directly with the owner because it was less expensive than using the service, but if you are anxious about it that is a worry free way to go.

i rented points this past summer and would never do it again. my dining plan that i paid for wasnt attached to my reservation. i wasted a whole day on the the phone with the owner and at the desk trying to get it worked out. i ended up paying for the dining plan twice! the owner never gave me the money back. $1500 im still sick over it. shes a long time poster, its disgusting

We're looking to rent for that same week. I've been in contact with both David's site and the DVC rental store - and no one has points. I'm still on their list to try and fill my request, but it's not looking good!

Everyone makes it sound like renting with a service is a sure thing ... I wasn't really aware that it's very possible that rooms will be available, but points will not. And the rooms will be sold out before points become available.

We recently completed a stay renting points for the first time. It was a great experience BUT we had to cancel our original reservation just a few days before we were to leave due to a friend's passing. We were lucky enough to have rented from 2 wonderful people who worked with us to reschedule but we were at the mercy of availability within the next 30 days. Our new reservation required fewer points than we purchased so we were out the money we spent on that. The owners we rented from were not obligated to help us but they were good people.

I recommend doing your homework and checking up on people before entering a deal. It can be a great value but it is work to minimize your risk.
