I didn't bother to read the whole thread.

I use a Canon 50D and an 85mm f/1.8 prime lens. I can't afford the 70-200mm f/2.8. A photographer for Utah and Gymnastics magazine recommended the 85mm for my tight budget. I just crop in.

They may not end up in a gymnastics magazine but very Mom worthy...

And a lighting nightmare from Animal Kingdom Bird Show...

Great pictures! I don't like to crop because you can lose detail, but sometimes "you have to do what you have to do." I posted earlier, but since you said you didn't read the thread... check your local photography stores. It's possible you can rent the 20-200 for a weekend. I do and it costs me ~$40 for the weekend. Small price to pay for the reach it gives me.

I only shoot video because it's much easier! I have a terrible time getting still shots. Plus, you can't take both at the same time. It is possible to get still shots extracted from video if you have the right software, but I've never tried it. Usually I am the only member of the family that can make it to DD's meets, and the others would rather see video when we get home than still shots. If anything, I show them the professional photographer's still shot proofs (if the meet is big enough to have a photographer), and I can always buy some of them if I really like them.

Sorry I'm no help. Are you a member of Chalkbucket.com, a gymnastics forum? I am sure you will find lots of people on there who take photos of their kids' meets and can advise you.

I just use my phone as a camera LOL, if she wins I take pic's.. but she has been doing gymnastics since she was 4 now 14, at first I would take lots of pic's and video. I have hundreds of pictures of her at meets- they all look the same after awhile. So now I just watch and enjoy intend of playing with cameras and lens.

I do have a pet peeve - I hate watching people use there ipads to take pictures- please don't do it.. yes its nice you have an Ipad but please don't put it in my face or stand in front of me because you have to get close to take a picture use a really camera or a phone, oh and btw everybody has them..
Ok I'm done

Thanks! Yes, I rented once, but without practice I had a hard time with that big lens. She's now moved on from gymnastics. She's thinking of doing cross country - those should be some exciting shots!

I just came off night shift 2 months ago so I now have more energy to pursue photography. Not sure where I want to go with it.

Taking pix at meets was good for my nerves. I focused on the photography. Was a nice diversion.

Suemom2kay those are great pictures. Well done!

I still havent decided on a camera yet, but i do know i need one that does good video too.
Last meet i did some action shots of her floor routine, and did vid for everything else. She was looking for her floor routine vid and was not happy that i didnt film it
She likes to go over it to see what she can improve on.
