Thank you for this. It is a great help. DH and I are hoping to book a trip in 2014. We would love to take the kids but would like the younger two to be a tad bit older. I will be saving this info! Thanks again.

When I have purchased foreign currency from Wells Fargo, I was not charged a cash withdrawal fee; my card treated it as a purchase. Obviously, different credit cards will work differently. I can say that Wells had a better exchange rate than any local bank. ATM's are a great way to get cash, but I have had difficulty with some foreign ATM's. Also, ATM's are a magnet for con artists, who will offer to help you use the machine, then claim your card was taken by the machine, then retrieve your card from the machine after you leave. Also, I like to have cash in hand when I land in a foreign country. So check your local bank vs Wells, but I bet Wells offers a better deal. As you say, there is the danger that your card will treat it as a cash withdrawal, but my card has not.
If I were to get currency from Wells Fargo again, I would use the debit card associated with my checking account. Fortunately, I have enough euros left from my most recent Europe visit to tide me over until I get to an ATM. When possible, I try to use an ATM machine inside a bank.

When we went to Japan we found AAA to give us the best exchange rate on changing US dollars to Yen. We had to pre-order and pick it up a few days later. Just another place to look into when traveling internationally.
