Having someone visit your resort while you're there?

I have an Uncle that lives in Spring Hill, FL and he asked about coming to spend a day with us while we are in Disney in February. Any suggestions? From what I understand, we cannot invite him to our resort (AKL) and allow him to be able to hang out at the pool, etc....correct?

Aside from the parks (he's not into that & it's not a good visiting atmosphere), any suggestions of a place where we can just sit around, hang out and grab a bite to eat?

Also - the option is there I guess for us to go visit him for a day instead - though he really wanted to come to us I believe. But if we were to consider that - how far is it exactly? Is it an easy trip back & forth?

I think you're fine to have your uncle come visit you at AKL, and there should be plenty there to keep you occupied, between the animal viewing and the dining & shopping options. My sister lives in the Orlando area, and she & her family have come to visit us at our resort a couple times -- once at Poly and once at BWI. We didn't spend any time at the pool, but otherwise hung out and enjoyed the resort. Basically, I think the pool is the only real no-no. Oh, and resort parking is usually limited to three hours.

You certainly could have your Uncle visit you at AKL. I'm sure there are a lot of wonderful places around the resort to visit and enjoy the scenery. You could go to your room/balcony for quiet. I'm not sure why you couln't sit at the pool with a drink or lunch. If you are staying there and want a drink at the pool, I'm sure your Uncle would be welcome.

All resorts are open to the public to use their restaurants and shops. Have fun and enjoy your visit.

Another option if you are not over occupancy is to add him to the reservation so he can do all the things with you, even if he does not sleep there. If you have the dining plan it is more complicated but that is always an option

We stayed at AKL two years ago and my neice and her friend came to the resort and we went to the pool with no problems. NO one ever asked if they were staying there. They had lunch at the resort too.

My ds and his wife visited us at Kidani two years ago. Nothing could have been easier. He drove up, gave my name and room number and told the security people he was visiting us. In he went.
Actually using the pool can be problematic...if a lot of non-guests decide to swim, it can make it very crowded. So, that's frowned upon. But you can certainly hang out around the pool and visit. There is a nice lounge area just down a bit from the lobby, as well as Boma for food. You can grab something quick at Mara, the food court. THen take it out to the pool and eat there if you want. There are a lot of little nooks and crannies where you can sit and visit with people....search those out before he gets there.

The only problem with this idea is that if they already have 2 adults in the room the 3rd would be charged the extra adult fee.

One tip I can give you is to make sure he has your name (main name on reservation) and room number handy when he gets to the guard shack. That was the advice I was given by the guard when my sister was coming to visit me while I was staying there. She didn't have any problems getting in.

You can also hang out at the Boardwalk (even take the bus from AKL to go there). Many locals park at the Boardwalk and go to dinner there, so I know it isn't an issue. However, I think you would be fine having him visit at AKL. Again, I have met many locals dining at AKL and spending an evening hanging out there.

You guys could also try DTD. Lots of places to hang out, eat and shop.

I stayed at fort wilderness cabins and I asked the front desk about having guest come to visitus, they said sure they gave us a pass for their car. We were also told that they could swim with us and enjoy the same stuff we do around the fort. I don't see why he couldn't swim with you, as he is your guest. I think that the resort just wants to know when you have a guest. We also let the guard shack know too.

When we stayed at the Grand Floridian two years ago we had a family of 6 come and visit us. We asked the hotel and they said absolutely. We went to eat in the hotel and then we hung around the pool. We even used some of our leftover meal credits on some of them with the restaurant knowing. Anyone at Disney is very accommodating.

Depends on the class of resort you are staying in. I believe it is as low as $15/night for a value up to $25/night for a deluxe resort.

I know that when DH, DS & I stayed at the Beach Club to celebrate DS 21st Birthday, we had to pay an extra $25/night for him.

This summer I joined my parents for 10 days out of their 3 week stay at PORFQ, the resort website listed an additional adult as being $15/night extra. However, the extra charge was never mentioned, both when I was added to their reservation and when I checked in and picked up my KTTW and such. Not sure if it was pixie dust or not, but it was nice to have more parks money!
