cats and counters!

How do I train a cat to stay off the counter? the cat has even gone as far as jumping on my stove tonnight I allow them to jump up on the conter by my fish tank (which is seprated from the rest of the counter) to get on the fridge and cabinate tops (they sleep there). How do I train her? I have 3 cats but only ONE sassy one!

I use SSSCAT. Took only 3 days to train them.

Two tricks that I have heard about are to put salt on the counter or tinfoil. Cats don't like the feel on their feet. Or you could get a spray bottle with water and spray the cat when you see it on the counter.

I've heard of the tinfoil method too and we tried it when we adopted our second cat from my grandparent's farm. She's pretty clueless and apparently missed the message that she's supposed to dislike foil, and water, and ...

This. Plus a very loud SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS noise.

40+ years of cats and I have yet to have one on the counter.

Mine too. SSSSSSSSSSS noises don't work. In fact we haven't found any noise that keeps my one cat off of the table or counters. Sometimes it sounds like Satan is in the house with the noises coming from my mother trying to get the darn cat off of things.

I gave up. Honestly I don't care anymore. I put them down if I see them up there, but I just clean the counters before I eat.

Me too. My cat knows where she can go and where not to go. It took a lot of dedicated squirting and being consistent though and saying loud, "NO!" a lot for several months. Then one day, she either grew up enough to understand, or she got tired of fighting me on squirting her and shooing her down. She suddenly stopped.

I have heard that double sided tape works. Put it on your counter and they will hate it. I let mine on the counter too.

Same here. Only one of mine gets up on the counters, but I gave up trying to convince him not to ages ago. I tried everything, including squirting him with the hose nozzle from the sink - at one point he even jumped onto the stove when it was on and burned all four paws...that didn't deter him either.

When I cook, I clean the counters and shut him away until I'm done. Other than that, I've given up trying to train this one!

well, I guess the avalance of boxes worked (had all my movin ones on the table and they fell). she has decided the counters, cabnates are no longer cool places but the baby lettuce box (that takes up a good deal of my kitchen) rocks! guess ill be walking on a box for a few years while on the topic, How do I get said kitty to LEAVE the kitchen? She wont venture into any other room (including the attached living room) without being carried and the minute I put her down she runs off to the kitchen. Shes not an only kitty (shes got two playmates, one who likes her and one who dosent). Any ideas?

i can't answer your question op.

i have a cat and a new kitten.

they jump on my counters and on the dining table all the time.
if they fall asleep on the counter, i move them to the floor.

i just live with it...............
