Sorrento, Italy

Has anyone been to Sorrento on their Med cruise? I want to take the hydrofoil to Sorrento and the train back in order to visit Herculaneum or Pompeii. I went to Pompeii last time by train.

This was on a Celebrity cruise - but a group of 6 of us from our Cruise Critic roll call went to Pompeii, Sorrento, and Positano with RomeInLimo: http://www.romeinlimo.com/naples/

While on a RCI cruise, we went to Herculaneum and Sorrento by train. We went to Pompeii on a prior land trip.

We had planned to take the hydrofoil one way, but decided not to due to drizzly weather.

Haven't been there on a cruise, but I would consider on the top 5 of the most beautiful places I have been. The views, the food, and the culture are stunning. Don't miss it!

I am so glad to hear how beautiful it is. I am taking 2 of my teenaged sons on this trip. Took their older brother last time and he decided to skip Pompeii. Big mistake in my opinion. I found it amazing and mind boggling. I wanted to see just a bit more of the Italian coast yet still include these historical sites.

We stopped in Sorrento all too briefly in 2011. My husband and I have decided we will absolutely go back there on our next trip to Italy and spend a few days! We were coming from Capri but took the train from Sorrento to Pompeii...it was very simple.

We then took the train from Pompeii to Naples and the free tram back to port.

We felt the same way about Sorrento. It's very picturesque and worthy of an extended stay.

This is the info I used when planning to go to Capri on our last med cruise. It also covers travelling to Sorrento. I used this website for all of our prts of call.

http://www.eportreviews.com/Europe/Naples_Italy.htm

I would add, to get up early and hot foot it to the hydrofoil ticket offices as soon if not before they open, to avoid long lines and then go back on the boat for breakfast. We had to queue for over 45mins to get our tickets for the hydrofoil at around 8.45 in the morning, so we wasted a lot of time.

We went on the 2007 cruise. I agree it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. We did a DCL tour went by bus to Sorento and was there a couple of hours and then on to Pompei. It was a great excursion except for the rain which is no one's fault. DH and I are going on the 6/15 cruise and wish it was stopping at Naples but we are not. Enjoy your trip.

Take a look here:

http://kevinstringer.co.uk/med%20cruise%202008/day7.htm

It's a report from my wife on our day docked in Naples on a Med cruise on the Celebrity Summit.
We took the hydrofoil to Positano, the bus back to Sorrento and the train to Naples. Just about covered all the forms of transport available!

Thank you, Kevin! I read about your day in Positano and Sorrento, and then read all of your trip report. Your wife did a wonderful job! My in-laws were on the same Summit itinerary in November 2008 - but the ship had engine troubles and they had to skip Dubrovnik.

For those planning Med cruises in 2013, I highly recommend buying Rick Steves' Mediterranean Cruise Ports: http://www.amazon.com/Rick-Steves-Me...n+cruise+ports.

You're welcome Nancy. I'll pass on your kind words to her.

Did you by chance post a trip report some years back about your trip to Califronia including Yosemite. I seem to recall your family members' names and your daughters from your amazing photos back then.
Due to your trip report and photos of Yosemite, I was able to get my husband to fly to California from Ohio and we spent 10 days there.
Just wanted to say thank you. Of course he won't be flying across any oceans just yet but my sons will be coming to Europe.
