WWYD.......Where would u go ..school related

I have an 11 yr old she is currently in the 8th grade taking 3 high classes. Algabra, biology and french 1. She attends a public school. While having a meeting with school last week reguarding history the guidence counsler and principal...told me that the school can no longer meet her needs and we should look at other options for high school. So now I have to figure out what the best option would be for her.

I am open to any and all ideas. I am willing to move just about anywhere. Only requirement is that i need to find a job but i dont care what i do.

Options i've started looking at:

combination of continuing at our public sublimented with online courses


private high schools both all girl and co-ed.

I am tring to find but with no luck yet the high school where u get your hish school diploma and associates degree at the same time.

Her ultimate goal is to go to Harvard and to be a Pediatric cardilogist or heart transplant surgeon and maybe on her days off she would work as a flight surgeon on a med flight helicopter.

There is a school for profoundly gifted kids in Reno, NV called the Davidson Academy. Check it out, people have moved from all over the country to put their kids in school there.

This is not for smart kids, this is for the profoundly gifted smart kids. It is on the campus of the Univ. of NV Reno. My DS had a 15 year old physics genius in one of his classes a few years back.

It is a free public day school.

Sometimes, I think it is important to let 11-year-olds act like 11-year-olds. Even if they are gifted.

Because if you don't do that, they can be socially awkward.

Pushing her to think about some of this stuff before it is time will be premature.

Moving might be difficult on her. She probably has friends and family she depends on. That probably helps her more academically than you realize.

A lot of schools will allow children to attend local community colleges for high school credit at the junior and senior level. This is widespread and very common. There is also AP credit - again, widespread and common.

I would look at local HS that allow them to attend local junior colleges for credit at the junior / senior years of high school, so that she can receive dual credit during 11th and 12th grade.

Pediatric cardiology is one specialty; trauma or general surgery is another. So a surgeon generally wouldn't practice in both of the settings you describe. You would probably pick one or the other. When she is much older maybe she could shadow some doctors to see what she would like - usually, towards the end of undergraduate school / college completion.

On my days off, I lay around and do nothing. Sometimes, I do laundry, or cook. Maybe clean up around the house. Being a flight surgeon on a med flight helicopter never crossed my mind. I think I might start doing that.

Because they cant give her a rigorous enough education. we a a very rural school we have 500 in grades k - 12. we offer only 3 AP courses art biology and english. I am the parent who has gone to every parent conf to ask for more homework more project harder materials for her. Only to be told we already are giving her more more and harder work and she really bealong in a higher grade. She was reading at 2. In second grade she read Moby Dick while the rest of her class was reading things like Bailey School Kids and the Magic Tree House books

This is just the type of place im looking for. She is taking her SAT in dec so that too may open up some opportunities for her

How far away is your nearest large public high school?

Would they offer more diversity for your DD?

I've done a fair bit of work with gifted students. I agree with the quote below:

It's important to keep her with her age peers (kids of the same age) while also putting her with her academic peers (kids who are as strong academically as she is). I would NOT look for a program that puts her into junior college. That's keeping her away from her age peers and the kids at a junior college wouldn't be her academic peers either.

The best bet would be to find a highly selective college prep private school. There are lots of them on the East Coast. You can find boarding schools or day schools, girls' schools or coed schools. Now is a good time to start looking, but you will have to act quickly. Applications are generally due by January 31.

She should be taking the SSAT for admissions to high school.
