I work for the State of Washington and they are shifting employees onto high deductible health insurance plans. For my auto and homeowners policies I choose the $5,000 deductible to save money. I only need the insurance if I total my car or my house burns to the ground.

Then for you, you're right, the trip insurance is pretty meaningless.

My work is forcing us to high deductible policies; I have no choice in that. For my car insurance and home insurance, I pay a bit more and have a MUCH lower deductible than you. So I feel like I can actually use my policies. Which I have. There was a monstrous hail storm, and I got a new roof & siding paid for mostly by my insurance. My car was hit in a parking lot, and my insurance paid most of the cost to have it repaired. I'm definitely one of those people that the insurance company wishes they didn't have.

I guess you get what you pay for.

It really just depends on you and your situation. We have two younger children and I want to make sure that they are taken care of no matter what. If I spend an extra $150 for that, so be it!

Our medical insurance doesn't cover us out of the country. I would hate for a medical emergency on one of our cruises to seriously damage us financially. Others don't have that concern.

As noted above, you don't need insurance.....until you need it. We usually get travel insurance to provide "out of US" medical coverage, although on the Alaska cruise I didn't purchase it. My logic was that a medical issue would likely be handled in the US.

Do we make insurance claims often--no. But when our house was hit by lightning and caught on fire, I was sure glad that I had homeowners insurance. The cost of that claim would equal many years of insurance premiums. If you consider that I'm likely to own a home for 50 years and insure it, the insurance company will still come out ahead.
