is there a lot of pin trading with cast members

I know there is an official pin trading meet or something similar. But... do CM like all the CMs walking all around the ship wear the pin trading lanyard or waist pad like all over WDW? My kids are really into trading in the parks and I hope they can do it on the ship too

Each evening at approximately 7 o'clock, there is a station set up that you can go to and trade pins. As well, in the shops you can find some of the CMs walking around with a belt or a lanyard with whom you can trade. If you don't find anyone, ask at the desk because they always have pins behind the till to trade. There is also a designated night where you will find some of the ships officers in the main lobby trading pins with you. Tip: hang around a long while on that night because anybody on the ship with pins comes to that and you can get some really good finds!

My kids have loved trading on the ship. CMs working in the shops usually have lanyards. The CMs at GS also tend to have them. You will usually find the CMs handing out wipes in front of the dining rooms with lanyards as well.

I highly recommend buying pins NOW from http://www.mousepinsonline.com. They net down to less than. $2 each and they are official Disney pins. Perfect for starter trading.

Yes as others have posted you will find CMs to trade with but it is not going to be anywhere close to what your opportunities are in the parks. And unless there are others coming along and trading with the CMs, I unfortunately found that there really wasn't a whole lot changing on their lanyards. Now I did find some Awesome trades at the pin trading event with the ship's Officers. That is well worth attending!! Enjoy and have fun!

couple more questions...
What is GS?
What about the servers in the dining rooms?
Guessing the pin events are noted on the Navigator?
What about the CM on CC - just hoping for pin activity

To LBrandy... I just bought a set of 20 trading pins on ebay for around $14. I have done this like the last 4 times we have gone to WDW and never a problem.

GS= guest services.

OK, how lanyards work....if the CMs are busy, the lanyards disappear into a drawer. You'll see this at guest services and in the shops. When not too busy, they will wear their lanyards and are more than happy to trade.

Pin trading events are noted in the Navigators--the best one is pin trading with the officers.

People in the shops on Castaway Cay will sometimes have lanyards--again, depending on how busy things are. The person handing out the wipes before lunch and breakfast will often trade. Servers during meals--no. They have too much to do!
