Figuring out tips before cruise?

Hi all, I was wondering if there is a way that you can figure out what your tips will be (a good estimate) before your cruise? I like to buy Disney gift cards to pay for a lot on my vacations as a way to "save" before the trip and it would help to know how much I'm looking at for tips. We are doing the 7 night Eastern Caribbean in March 2013, and only plan to eat in normal dining rooms (No Palo or Remy). Thanks in advance!

Yes. This is very easy. $12 per person per day is the standard ammount. That's $84 per person for a 7 night cruise, $168 for two. What we did was bring a gift card for $200 with us, knowing that we would use all of that for tips, and maybe more, as we wanted to go above the standard ammount if service was outstanding. It was. We ended up probably spending about $220 total on tips, not including on night at Palo. This is exactly how we will plan for the next trip.

I'm editing this to add that they wil automatically bill your room for the standard tip ammount, and give you recipts for the tips to give to your waiter, assistant waiter, room steward, and the head waiter. They provide envelopes for those recipts, so you can add cash if you want, or you can do what we did. We went to Guest services and had them increase the ammount billed to the room, and then wrote those adjusted totals on the recipts I gave to those I was tipping.

In addition to these tipe, you should tip anyone who delivers room service to your room, as they are not covered in the automatic tips. I go a buck an item, and bring an envelope full of singles on the ship just for this purpose, as well as tipping baggage handlers at the port and such.

You can use an online cruise tip calculator like at http://cruisetip.tpkeller.com/ - it allows you to say how many people are cruising, what cruise line, how many days and then populates suggested amounts for each tipped position and calculates the total.

This one is cool because if you want to tip in cash, it tells you how many of each bill you need, and offers the option to round up. You can also compare to other cruise lines (if you're interested).

I'd recommend buy the passporters book. I bought the online/Kindle version. There is a sheet in there you can print out to budget for your cruise. I used it to plan everything from tips to drinks and excursions.

Awesome, thanks! Looks like around $336 so I'll budget $400.
