For those of us running the Wine and Dine Waivers can be printed- I'm bib # 3822! I figure that puts me around corral C! I'll be driving up Saturday Mid morning and staying at All Star Sports- plan to head to the expo then Down Town Disney for Lunch then check in for a nap- DH and DS will head to Epcot and meet me at the finish. Ran 9 on Sunday and was happy with the run-I have a 5mile Trail race this weekend then the following weekend want to do 12-15 depending on the legs- will keep the last two weeks before the wine and dine light with just 6miles each for the long run. If anyone else knows their bib #'s please post -

Hi All

I need your opinion. The weather here is starting to turn yucky We have 4-6 weeks max of run/walking outside before it just won't be possible anymore. Last night it was in the 40's and we were getting pelted with light sleet- not to mention it is pitch black on the school track! I get the begeezus scared out of me every time someone passes me in the dark.

Anyhow, to my question.... I'm wondering if I should get a 3or 4 month gym membership over the winter and continue my run/walking.

I question it because I really don't want to. I have never run on a treadmill and I HATE exercising in front of other people. I even make my kids and husband leave the living room when I do Zumba. And I am quite the Zumba expert!

Secondly, I don't feel as if I have really progressed in my running ( been doing it since August ) so I don't feel I will lose much over the winter.

I would continue with Zumba and yoga over the winter and my daily indoor walks at work.

Maybe I'm missing something as I am new to the run/walking.... Currently I run for 60 seconds and walk 90. I do that for 30 minutes. I really don't seem to get any better than that. Or maybe I am right where I should be?

Thanks for any advise

I guess I hadn't realized there were Biggest Loser races. I will have to look into them. Welcome! All levels of walking and running fit in well here at WISH.

Eek! I'm bib #5891. Not sure what that means. I've only ever been in B or C for Disney races, but maybe I've been moved back. Or Dottie, maybe you're in B this year. I'm happy to be more with people at my own pace, just feel bad that DH always finish over an hour before me. Last year he took a nap in Ellen's Energy Adventure while waiting - a private showing as there was only one other guest in there!

I think it depends on your running goals. If you enjoy running and want to complete any races in the first half of next year, you should figure out a way to keep going during the winter. If you'd be happy walking throughout the winter along with Zumba and yoga, you would certainly maintain a good level of fitness. Maybe work in some more core or lower-body strength training as well. Also, if you're able to do a brisk walking pace on your indoor walks at work, you could aim for walker friendly events in the spring and summer and maybe something longer using run/walk in the fall.

***************
So that ALTRAs - on Friday I really wasn't sure I liked them, something in the footbed felt weird. I peeled up the insole and found a second rubbery insole underneath. I had totally forgotten these came with an optional stability "wedge", as they call it. If your feet are neutral, you remove it. The shoes felt so much more normal after I took that out! Did a short 30 minute walk/run with them.

I'm still recovering from my 13-miler 10 days ago. The back of my right knee is still bugging me - not sure still if it's a knee thing, bottom of hamstring, top of calf, nerve thing, or what. Stretching and foam rolling seem to help but not cure. My online research has been inconclusive. Was supposed to do 4 miles on Sunday but only did that including warm up and cool down (usually I don't count that time or distance). Leg started to bug me enough I didn't want to push farther. Managed 30 minutes today knowing it was there, but not in pain.

I'm also taking glucosamine religiously and using arnica cream (homeopathic) once a day or so. I'm thinking about getting it checked out to make sure I'm not making things worse or that it won't come back with a vengeance as we get closer to the marathon.

In other fitness news, I looked into the Yoga place near my house - I've been doing okay with the DIY at-home method, but think I might like to try to fit it into my schedule more regularly. They have a late "candlelight" class at 8:30pm, so I could possibly get to that even if I do DD's bedtime routine (DH and I usually take turns).

Kim! Nice to have you join us! Congratulations on your 5k. Like Nicole said we have all levels of runners on this thread. I do run/walk intervals with much more walking than running.

I just saw this on the Runner's World Facebook feed this week that I think applies to all of us:

Dottie, I am in corral D and as happy as can be. I was in C for Tinkerbell. I need that little cushion between me and the sweepers. I think your plan to take it easy the last couple of weeks is a good one. I have 15 this week-end and then only speedwork until the race. I'm going to cross of the miles on the map as I go along and picture where I am to help pass the time.

If you aren't training for a race or anything it would be fine to take a break from running considering how active you are now. Do you do any speed work or vary your intervals at all? Do you track to see if you get a bit farther every run? Or are you running just to have a good time? One winter I used the indoor track ocassionally and just paid the $10 day pass as I needed it. I could use the facility all day -- even the hot tub. If you do take a break maybe a race or some goal will help you to have something to work toward when spring comes and you can get outside again. Personally, I would not do this if I didn't have Disney races to look forward to but that is probably me and my sore legs talking.

Nicole, hope that knee feels better soon! Take it easy and hopefully it will be recovered very soon. The "candlelight" yoga sounds very relaxing but I would be worried I would fall asleep during the resting part! Can't wait to see you soon at the W&D!

I had a local 10k race on Sunday. I had a great race although I did not quite get the time I was hoping for. But if I kept up that pace for a half it would take 14 minutes of my Tinker Bell time so I called it a success! I am definitely feeling the effects from running what was the last race for my shoes. I have my new pair and will be breaking them in on my LR this week-end. I've worn them a couple of days at work and on a couple of short runs already. I'll take my spare pair in case I get any blisters or anything.

Our lovely hostess is celebrating her son's birthday with him and his friends at WDW this week and asked me to post a QOTW.

What do you like to wear when you are running? Do you like to dress up for your races?

Have a great day!

Just checked the Wine and Dine race thread- I'm in corral B( 2166-4535) so I believe you will be in C. Sorry I did not write all the corral placements down.

Lisa H- QOTW- I do not do costumes however I try to be matchy- For the princess I wore yellowish attire since Belle is my favorite Princess- I made a shirt to wear afterwards that said "A Belle at heart but a Beast When I run with those Characters on it- Not sure yet what I will wear for the W/D depends on if I wear my blue Brooks glycern 9 or my pink Glycern 10s I guess

No worries - just hoping I'd be in C. Sounds like I will. And DH will be in A again.

QOTW: What do you like to wear when you are running? Do you like to dress up for your races?
In warmer weather, I like running shorts and a tech shirt. My most comfy pair of shorts were a cheap pair I got on the clearance rack at Sports Authority. They are really lightweight and just fit right on me. They don't have the bells and whistles that nicer running shorts have, you know, like pockets. So they aren't ideal for long runs unless I wear a belt for my stuff. I haven't quite found my groove for long runs in cool weather.

I would like to dress up for races but never really get a solid idea together that I can make and run in. And honestly, I know I'm going to stop for photos, so I want something that looks flattering. I had a custom shirt made for Wine & Dine last year. It said "I thought this was the Electrical Parade". I had wanted to decorate it will little lights but ran out of time to make that happen. For Wine & Dine this year I thought about going as a waitress, but a few weeks ago I saw this cute skirt that looks like Minnie on the clearance rack at Target. I'm going to wear it over black capris and probably wear a black shirt and mouse ears, which I still have to buy. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to go with long or short sleeves.

Well my 5 mile trail race into a 7 miler due to the trails not being as clearly marked as organizers stated. Several runners were lost and I helped one women carry her toddler who was clearly pooped out-DH was so worried that I was 20 minutes past my usual time he sent out a search party-by that time though I was on the right track and headed for the finish- My DS did the 2 1/2 mile route and placed 1st in his age divison. Was happy to have a free pancake breakfast awaiting me- and since the temps for FL was in the low 60's it made for a pleasent morning run. All in all a good prep for the W/D.

Congrats on your 7 miler?! Sorry it wasn't 5 like you expected. Sounds like it was not well-organized for so many people to be lost!

*********
I have been taking it easy the past few days since DH is out of town and I want to make sure I can complete my last long run before W&D. I was supposed to do it over the weekend, but with DH gone there was no way I was getting in a 4-hour run (DD is too big for a jogging stroller and I didn't want to get a sitter). So 15 miler tomorrow! I've been doing some core exercises and walking, so hopefully I've done enough to keep my fitness up on my marathon training plan. I'm off to download some more podcasts for tomorrow!

We are back and I am pooped! It is a lot of work to keep up with (6) 21 yos for 5 days, but we did it. I will try to pop in later with an update.

BTW, Dottie, I do love you, but your fellow gator fans--not so much. If one more person at wdw would have chomped IN MY FACE they might have found themselves armless, just sayin. But other than the game we had a fabulous time.

Love you too Rose, and let me appologize for my rude fellow gator fans- there is a proper etiquette to the Chomp and it is not in someone's face.- Hoping we take a bite outa GA next week!

Hi! I'm really new to running, (I'm really a run/walker right now), but I hope it's not too late to join!!

Name: Jessica
DisName: disneytink29
Upcoming Races: Caine Halter Lungs 4 Life 5k 11/3/12, Greenville Zombie Run (a 5k) 11/3/12
Completed Races in 2012 (or earlier): Happy Haunts 5k at WDW - my 1st 5k!
Favorite Race: None yet!!
Anything else you want to share (age, where you live, etc): I'm 31, I live in Greenville, SC, and I had surgery to remove a benign brain tumor on 5/9/12, so I'm working my way back to being completely fit and healthy!!
And for fun, favorite running shoe: I have a couple pairs of Nike running shoes, but I'm behind the curve as far as being fitted, etc.

Rose glad that you had a great time at WDW. Sorry for the Gator problems -- those Carolina shirts were probably like a red flag to a bull . . .

Jessica! Nice to have you join our group! What a wonderful way to celebrate your recovery by doing something fun and healthy. Looks like you have a couple of 5Ks coming up. Good luck!

I'm in my favorite part of training for the W&D -- taper! I still have several short runs, a speed workout and a 4 miler but I'm glad to be done with the long runs for now -- 15 miles last week-end on the indoor track makes for good mental preparation.

How is everyone doing?

I see you figured it out, but I assumed we would be in B again. Are you running the whole thing or run/walking? I am looking for a 10 mpm average, but will run/walk.

So here are my thoughts. I agree that a lot of it has to do with your long term goals. If however your anxiety is keeping you from even thinking about long term goals, then read on. In Dec 2009 I rejoined the Y and I hated it. I felt so self conscious and miserable every time I went. And I felt fat. But I stuck with it. I realized after awhile that no one really cared about what I was doing. They were all there to do their own thing. Only once in over two years did someone give me a "look" about run/walking on the treadmill--and honestly at this point I could care less.

Having said all that, I think (from experience) that the treadmill is a really good way to work on speed and fitness. I have been using the treadmill to push my walking and am now able to consistently walk at ~14 minutes per mile. You do have to be conscious of not over doing it, but I found it really helped me to learn what certain speeds feel like.

Whatever you decide, there is no right or wrong answer, the important thing is to do something to stay fit.

I hope the knee is doing better. Do you think the glucosamine helps? I am hoping someone has altras at the expo so I can try a pair on. Oh--and we have been known to nap on Ellen on occasion....it has become a running joke in our family.

Thanks for keeping an eye on things Lisa. I am so glad you had a good 10k and a good corral for W&D.

When I run around here I am usually in shorts or a running skirt and a tech shirt. I do have tights for when it's cold. I did wear a tutu for the last Princess race and loved it. I am planning some kind of Pirate theme for W&D and have a new skirt, but not sure what else I will wear. Mike and I are planning costumes for the marathon as well.

FWIW, it was pretty cool in the evenings last week at WDW. I will still stick with a skirt, but you all definitely want dry clothes for afterwards.

Was happy to have a free pancake breakfast awaiting me- and since the temps for FL was in the low 60's it made for a pleasent morning run. All in all a good prep for the W/D.
Congratulations to Jake! And how nice to help out the lady with the toddler.

I hope the 15 miler went well!

Welcome Jessica! I will add you to the first page--probably tomorrow. My DS is in college at USC. We love visiting him in SC. I highly recommend getting fitted for shoes at some point. It's amazing what a difference it can make.

How is everyone doing?
Probably so, but it just was ridiculous how rude some people were. Our kids were so well behaved and polite like the lovely kids that they are, and people just kept trying to provoke them. And if I may add--we did all look pretty awesome dressed up for the game, even if it was an awful game!

I will have to post a picture or two for you all, but we were at WDW last week with our DS (21) and 5 of his college friends. We had a wonderful time--but got no sleep. I am almost feeling human again. It definitely was the trip of a lifetime and I think everyone had a really great time.

Mike and I are going to run 10-13 tomorrow--last long run before the w&d. A lot of it depends on the weather. It is miserable here--low 40s and nasty nasty rain. If we are on the treadmill it will be closer to 10. Then next weekend 6, then the W&D.

I hope everyone is doing well. I will be back sometime this weekend with a new question.

Thanks!! My nephew is also in school at USC! I'm in the Upstate of SC, which is a beautiful area, if I do say so myself!!

I had a rough run this Saturday - but I'm looking forward to my 5Ks this Saturday coming!!

The knee...meh. I almost completed my 15 miler last Tuesday. I really took the pace easy and did even more walking than I originally planned, but the knee or whatever it is just felt awful. I made it 12.75 miles and did 1 more mile the next morning. I did manage to teach dance and get in two 30-minute training run/walks later in the week - no problems. I have an appointment with a sports med doctor Thursday morning.

I don't know if the glucosamine helps - I've never taken it regularly before. I figure I'll try anything to get me through to the marathon.

It's been a year since I've been to the chiropractor and I'm thinking I might try that too! But my reasoning for that is more for neck/back/hip alignment.
