There's something about the smell of the chemicals that just shouts "Photography!"

I have only had the iPhone for a couple weeks but it appears to take decent photos. The HDR setting really helps with getting detail in skies and clouds. Since I use Photoshop I installed PS for iPhone and it does a good job with adjusting photos.
Here is one I took at dinner last night just to remember the wine (after a little tweaking in PS/iPhone):

Don't expect an iPhone to stand up to a good camera, used by someone who understands exposure. This is even more true when the lighting is not good. As good as the phone is, it is not that good!

Learn the rule of thirds. It will take you a long way.

You put your main subject where the lines cross and have the subject look into the picture.

If you are using "camera apps" go to options and turn grid on.

If you are using "genius apps" go to setting and turn on "guides"

This will show the grid lines on the phone. They won't show on te picture taken

Here is a site that shows images with grid lines. Study it and you will get the idea.

Agreed.
Also, the iPhone camera has a grid option, just click 'options' and slide grid to on.

I usually use Camera+ when i take pictures on my iPhone, which also has the grid.

I was looking for a camera app to help with low light and night shooting and ended up getting one called NightCap. I've only played with it a little so far, but the quality of the shots is definitely better than it is when I use either the camera alone or through Camera+
