I've yet to do a race where I didn't cry at least once -- sometimes more than once. I think it's just part of the process.

I'm still here and I would love it if the thread stays open. If it wasn't for Disboards, I would have never even imagined a half - marathon. And yet, I made reservations today to do just that. I'm doing the Princess. I picked up a pretty decent 10K time last weekend (1:07) so here I go.

Congrats on your 10k! That's great! I haven't figured out if I can do the Princess yet - a hopeful maybe.

I hope you love it! So far I've never been to one I didn't like.

I am trying some new shoes - they are called Altra - they have a "zero drop" sole, which means the heel cushioning is the same thickness as the forefoot. I just jogged in place and around my house with them so far - I want to make sure I can handle these - I'm so picky about shoes. It does make the Chi Running and Walking form come more naturally when you don't have the typical big running shoe heel. But every time I've tried something other than my tried-and-true Asics, I regret it. We'll see! For now, my Asics aren't completely shot, so I will be alternating them anyway. Can I make my Asics last me until Wine & Dine? Not sure. It seems like I'm breaking in new shoes the week before every half that I do! That's my fear, I guess: that I won't like the Altras enough to do long runs and my current Asics will be dead by then and...and...

Nicole--I can't wait to hear if you like the Altras. We went to look at a pair last weekend, but they only had the trail shoes in stock and they were very stiff. I like the Newtons but I think they are hard on my heel during the walk breaks. There is some cushioning, but not enough in my opinion. What I read about the Altra's made it sound like they had a bit of overall cushioning, but still 0 drop. I end up on my toes too much--which is why I am hoping the running shoes are a little more flexible. Did they tell you to expect some calf/achilles soreness at first?

Melinda--have fun at yoga! What I have found is that I don't always like the class, but I always love how it makes me feel. lol Make sure you tell the instructor you are a beginner--I think you are a beginner, right?

You ladies were right!! Yoga was great and VERY hard @Rose, it was a beginner class, the 1st in a series of 3. The instructor took her time and explained every move in great detail. I can't wait for the 2nd class. I feel so energized and centered at the same time. I never would have thought to try yoga if I hadn't read it here. Thanks so much. You ladies are full of great ideas. Happy almost Friday!!

Good luck to this weekend's racers!

Rose - they did say there could be a little calf soreness with the Altras, but they have a lot shorter break in period than barefoot running shoes. I'm trying to decide if I should bite the bullet and wear them outside today or keep running around my house another day.

Quick race report! I did a 5K this morning - benefitting a foundation doing SIDS research and in memory of a sweet baby lost to SIDS. The family are friends of friends, and I don't know them, but it was powerful stuff thinking about all they've been through.

It was our coldest fall morning yet - 30 degrees when I got up! Even in gloves, my fingers were numb when the race started. Lucky for me, I was at Athleta yesterday to get some cold weather gear - headed out today in most of it!

The course was nice - suburban neighborhood and mostly flat with just a couple of notable exceptions. I've added a loop to my runs at home that has a pretty steep hill, though, so when I saw the first big incline on this course, I just reminded myself that I've been doing these at home...

It stayed cool, but the changing leaves and the rhythm of the running around me (and my playlist!) kept me moving along happily. This was the first time I've done this distance where I only checked my watch 2-3 times.

I've been doing Galloway intervals on my long runs but wanted to run this one all the way through. And I did! I matched my 5K PR and - color me shocked - won my age division! I felt good when I was done, even after turning on the jets for the last quarter mile or so. I'm really happy with how this one went.

XO
Liz

Congratulations Liz!! Sounds like a wonderful race.

I ran a long run this weekend. The plan was 16miles plus a mile cool down walk. We ran 17 miles (run 2 min walk 1 min) at an 11:45 average pace and walked another mile at the end for a total of 18!!! I was very anxious after last weekend, but the miles just seemed to melt away. It really was an awesome run. I am feeling a little beat up and sore, but overall just great. No ice packs were needed, which is kind of how I judge runs. I even ran the last mile without walk breaks at ~10 min/mile pace. Not too shabby.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Upcoming Races: Biggest Loser Run/Walk 5K (Panama City, FL)
Completed Races in 2012 (or earlier): Crawdad 5K (Ozark, AL)

Must admit, I'm more of a walker than a runner right now. I've only done the one 5K, and, of course, the most important thing is that I finished, nevermind the 57 minute time.

I was curious if there's anyone doing the Biggest Loser races, especially in Panama City on December 30?
