We have been able to book through Expedia before at special rates (25% off early booking). It's just a chance you will have to take because those discounts start coming up in spring.

OP: Have you tried to booking a Disney convention rate? I don't have Expo tickets so I can't check, but at Destination D, we could get good rates at the hotels through the links on the ticket confirmation. If we had not already booked at GCV using our points, we might have rebooked on the hotel side. Best of luck -- Suzanne

Nope. My parents and nephew went on the 9/30 cruise, but it didn't work for my schedule. We have been to both Expos and all 3 Destination Ds, but just as lowly D23 members.

I am not surprised that park tickets and hotel rooms are not yet available for those with D23 tickets. For the Destination D event in August, the convention tickets stayed the same price, even after the price increase for other tickets in June. -- Suzanne

All three of the Disneyland hotels are listed on lastminutetravel.com at discounted prices. What are your travel dates?

The senior rate is Disney and you have to be 60 and over to use it. You just
call the Disneyland reservation number and ask for the senior rate. You can
book two rooms with the discount. It is best to plan early for you dates.
The discount is 30% off room rates.

This is not a for sure, but I kept checking Expedia (.ca since I am from Canada). The GC was 400 plus a night and one day out of the blue it was 218 a night!!! I had been checking every day and just happened to find this deal. It was the only time I have stayed at the GC, so always keep checking!

Where did you find these prices?

I priced a studio at the DVC Villas for my stay and for 5 nights it was $1404.

You may want to check out the DVC board on here for info on renting points :-)

If you go to the DVC Rent/Trade board on DISBoards, people will rent you their DVC points, and you can use them to rent rooms at the Grand Californian. You should CAREFULLY READ ALL OF THE STICKY THREADS! However, it's a wonderful way to get a bargain rate at the hotels.

Advantages:

MUCH cheaper
Almost all the same amenities as any other resort guests (exceptions below)
Laundry is usually free to DVC guests

Disadvantages:

A little care needs to be taken in contracts and points (although I've done it at least 3-4 times, probably more, and I've never been ripped off)
No daily housekeeping service (this is the one and only amenity that is different)--there's generally a "trash and tidy" service after four days, and a full change of linens once during the week.

Overall, we've found it such a great deal. It is our usual method of staying at WDW. Due to the cheapness and closeness of the off-site hotels, and the relatively higher expense of the GC as opposed to our usual BWV/BCV rooms, we tend to not stay on-site at Disneyland. However, if an on-site stay at Disneyland is important to you, this is what I'd do.

The trouble I've run into with renting DVC points is that you can try to book your dates seven months in advance, and you'll still be waitlisted.

That happened to me trying to get the Grand Californian for Halloween, Vet's Day or New Year's this year. Hoping somebody can help me with a Memorial Day reservation now when the time comes--my last contact forgot all about me.

I know that this does not apply to all BUT, If you had someone in the Military with you (Or retired from the Military) they have 40% off GC through Sept 28th 2013.. Just a thought if you were traveling with someone that this applies to.. Good luck..
