This may sound harsh, but I suspect that over 50% of DSLR owners would be better off with an iPhone 5 and knowledge of how to capture good photos than their DSLRs and their current knowledge.

I am probably in that category but I think I'm better off with my DSLR because with that, I want to learn. I doubt I would have the passion to learn and the patience to make one mistake after another just to get one good photo and learn something that takes me a little closer towards taking some good photos.

That's the biggest difference! If you don't want to learn, don't bother buying one. My sister was thinking about buying my DSLR when I upgraded, and I basically talked her out of it. I told her it's a great camera, but it's too much camera if she's not going to try to learn to use it. If you want to learn, it's good, go for it. I've been hanging out with a professional photographer this summer, just to learn more about photography even though I don't want to be a professional!

I am not carrying three pods
There's something about the smell of the chemicals that just shouts "Photography!"

An iPhone (even a 5) is not a substitute for a good camera but it does have a decent camera that can give surprisingly good results when the subject is suitable and the light is right.

Even in HDR mode it struggles with this one, where a good camera could do much better.

Overall, I will not feel as restricted using the iPhone camera as I would have using my old phone but I do not plan to carry it instead of a camera.
