We got so tired of our kids (5 & 7) begging and pleading for stuff on our last trip that 2 days in we decided to give them a per diem.

We put $20 on a gift card in the morning and told the kids they could purchase whatever they wanted with it, but once it was gone not to ask for anything else. If they wanted something that cost more than $20 they had to save up for it. We added $20 each morning of the remainder of our trip.

This plan worked beautifully! Not only did they stop asking for every little thing they thought they just couldn't live without when mom & dad held the purse strings, they really put a lot of thought into what they wanted.

DS decided he really likes Stitch. He bought a small plush for about $13. Then he saved for several days until he could afford the $50 one.

DD found 3 things she just couldn't live without. We did end up advancing her a few days worth because we got a discount with our credit card. But she, too, didn't mind because she got the things she really wanted.

It's funny when it's someone else's money they just can't live without "that" item. But when it's their money it's not so enticing.

By the time our vacation was over both kids had nearly $30 left that they didn't spend. We're putting that on their cards at the start of our next vaction, whenever that may be.

We're there for 6 days and we've told the kids (5 and 2.5) that they get to pick 1 treat per day- it could be a toy, light up thing, balloon, etc. We have said that some things may be too expensive so they can combine days. It worked well with DD when she was 3. It should go well with her this time...but I'm not sure about DS. He has the serious gimmies. DD has been saving her money and is up to about $40 so that will go into it. I'm figuring we'll spend about $200 between the 2 of them. That sounds high, but we also have gift cards and Disney reward points to use.
