Internet. We got internet in 1992 via dial up with a modem that connected at 2400 baud. My husband (the computer geek) convinced me that we 'needed' this online service, and I thought he was a lunatic. At that time we were on a state of the art 386 computer that cost us over $1500 and we paid extra to have the gigantic harddrive with 540mg of memory on it!

We got a cellphone when I was pregnant with my DD in June of 1996. I didn't know anyone else who had one. At that time, everyone had beepers. When I got my cellphone, DH got a beeper, that way if I went into labor I could use my cellphone to call his beeper. My kids think the whole beeper thing is the most ridiculous thing anyone ever thought of, but we thought we were so forward thinking when we got our cellphone & beeper!

I convinced my parents to let me sign up with AOL in 1995 when I was in middle school.

I got my first cellphone in 1999, in HS. Never really used it though.

I think our years were the same: Internet at home 1994, AOL Dial up.

Cell phone right around 1998 or 99. ATT clunky flip phone for about $30/mo for maybe 30-40 minutes of talk? No texting back then and no data.

We had prodigy. I think it was 1989. I don't remember when we got our first cell phone. I'm thinking late 90s maybe!

Oh my goodness. I don't remember, but it was around 1992 or 1993 for the modem and 1994 for the cell phone, I'd guess. I remember we had to argue long and hard with our phone carrier to get a private line and in the end it took our State Representative (whose office was off the feed store he owned, no kidding) getting on the phone and, as per his secretary, cussing a blue streak (he was a strict Pentecostal too) to get us a private line, which my DH had to have for his modem for work.

Of course, we then took immediate advantage of both the modem and the private line!

I remember I used to flirt shamelessly online with the admin of our local Bulletin Board so he would subscribe to the alt.tv sites I wanted so that I could save my AOL time. (With DH looking on and laughing.)

I used to drive across the backend of nowhere to get to work, so I got a cell phone for safety's sake. I was never in an emergency and had to use it, but I did stop several times to let other people call and summon help.

I didn't get my first one until the original Motorola Droid came out four or five years ago.

ETA - I can remember dialing in to local Bulletin Boards before we started using Prodigy but I can't remember when we started doing that.
Prodigy didn't offer internet access until 1994. And until 1995 you could only use Prodigy's brower. Maybe you are confusing their online content with the web. They were HUGE in offering their own content.
First cell phone in January 1990, bag phone that served me well for 14 years.
First computer, with Prodigy in March 1994, internet a few months later.

Funny too at work, we all at computers at our desks in 1994. But just one special computer had internet access. It was set up in a public place where everyone could see what you were looking at, you had to sign in when you used it, and log every webpage you went to. Huge concern that you were just on the internet looking at porn. Now every computer has the internet, and we couldn't do our jobs without it. All the schedules are on the internet, not the local network, a lot of the files we need are no longer on the local network, but on the internet. E-Mail, on a remote server we have to access on the internet.

Then there are people like my brother, who just got on the internet 5 years ago, still has dial up, and since all he uses is email, sees no reason to upgrade.

I think it was 1993 when I got my first cell phone, used only for emergencies. I remember taking it with me to visit my folks and they were amazed by it.

I do remember in 1988 my boss having the Cellular One people come into the office to show him the latest in phone technology, he had a car phone and wanted something more portable. They showed him the newer bag phones, boy was that bulky! He said what he wished they had was something like Star Trek, just flip up a small device and talk....they said one day, maybe .

I was late to the internet, got it in 1998, and then the old-fashioned dial up AOL.

I had one of those too! I had a cell phone phone befor internet. I had that phone in a bag very early 90's and didn't get internet until around 1994- and it was Compuseve, Prodigy and AOL. I remember my first big AOL bill was within a few months of going online- it was about 300.00, they didn't have unlimited plans then!

My parents got AOL when I was 14, so 1995ish and I was only allowed to use it no more than an hour a day. Ridiculous now if I think how much I'm "online" haha!

I got my first cell phone when I was 17 (1998 )which I bought for myself since my parents didn't want me to have one (rebel) and it was a super cool dark green Nokia. I didn't want a phone unless I could find a green one. Oh to be young and stupid again...

My dad did have a "car phone" before this though but not for long since it wasn't very practical and apparently very expensive to use.
