Spin off: Random Information You Know About The States

Have you guys watched, "How the States Got Their Shapes"? I really like that show. It's got history, food, and a lot of personality all thrown together.

For some reason I can't recall anything from the show right now. But I thought it would be fun to discuss general information about states; trivia, history, local products, regional information, and fyi.

All I can think of right now is SC is known for speed traps! I don't know how true it is, but I remember people cautioning others about not speeding in SC. Come to think of it, last time I went there people were doing ultra fast speeds. Maybe it isn't true anymore. I don't know.

What random information do you know about the states?

There was one fact about Washington State that I was surprised was not on that show. When they did the border on whatever parralell it is between Canada and USA, it left this little bit of land that is connected to Canada, but not USA (it is the very end of a pennisula). The town there is called Point Roberts, population 1300. They only have a school there for elementary, the rest of the grades get bussed through Canada, across the border again, to Blaine Washington. Also for medical care, you must cross into Canada and then back into USA - really weird!

Volleyball was invented in Massachusetts.
The first basketball game was played here in 1891; and we have the Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Fig Newton was named for Newton, MA.
Massachusetts has the first (lowest) ZIP Code - 01001.
The first subway system in the United States opened in Boston in 1897.

Eventually they're going to get new trains

Don't they have the 1st license plate numbers also...it's real prestigious to have one and if you do, you can pass them down? Maybe I'm totally wrong. I'll have to look it up.

Love the show!

Loved You Don't Know Dixie too.
