There is no need to arrive at HDD much before show time. Tables are pre-assigned and everybody enters more or less at the same time. If you get there very early you'll just have to kill time wandering around the area. Fun for about 15 minutes but gets old after that.
However, be sure to allow enough time to actually get to HDD from wherever you are coming from. Keep in mind that the HDD location is near the lake so if you are arriving by boat from the MK, Contemporary or FW you are right there. If you arrive at FW by taxi, private car, bus you'll need to take the internal bus back to the HDD, which will add ~15 minutes to the trip. |

We had trouble once taking the boat from WL over...there were so many people pool hopping and taking the boats back at the same time, that we had to wait a while and were late.

I'll be coming from AK. Should I just take the bus to Wilderness Campgrounds?

Just realized your post said AK, not AKL. Once at Ft. Wilderness you'll have to transfer to the internal bus to get to Pioneer hall.

They tell you to get there early because they will make you get in line to take a family picture. They will come around near the end of the show with the picture for you to purchase. One year we did and one year we didn't purchase it. I would just get there early so you are not late. Not fun to walk in after it starts.

2) But, the real reason is that too many people liked to come late. 3) So, when we issue their tickets, we tell them 1/2-hr early. 4) We dodn't like lying, but those were our instructions. 5) We knew the doors did not open until the "show time" on the ticket. 6) But, we followed the rules. 7) However, under our breath we would whisper "Doors open at show time.". 8) Most people got the hint. |

I agree with the 1/2 hour rule.
Nice to get there early. Lots to do in the area - shops, horses to look at, get your HDD picture taken. I would do an afternoon in MK and then take the boat to the WL campground. A very nice boat ride on the way to the HDD - for any age person. Enjoy !

How long does it take to get from AK to Ft. Wilderness (not Pioneer Hall) using Disney buses? Internal transportation to Pioneer Hall would take 15min???

So is the bus the best bet from AK?
Are there buses for the campgrounds or do they share with a resort? Then once you are at the campgrounds, it's another interal bus? |
