Booking across UYs?

Let's say that I have an Oct. UY. I have a combination of banked 2011 points and 2012 points. They must be used by Oct. 1 of 2013 or I lose them. I understand that part.

We're thinking of doing F&W with friends next year and would need quite a few points to book what we want. I want to book a stay that spans Sept. into Oct. 2013.

1. Can I also use the points from 2013 and borrow from 2014 to book a longer stay (the part that extends into Oct.)?
2. If I can do this, would I be able to do this at the 11 month window (late Oct. 2012) for the whole stay?
3. Would it involve two separate reservations due the fact that it goes across my UY?
4. If so, would Member Services be able to combine them into a single reservation so that we wouldn't have to check out and check back in?

I hope that I'm wording this correctly so that I'm making my questions clear. Any help would be appreciated.

sure - you can always use banked+current+borrowed based on the UY you are staying in. so if you cross UYs, you can use up to 4 UYs worth of pts.

the issue would be if you needed to cancel. the part of the reservation at the end of your UY would be way past the banking window closing...so traveling late in your UY is always risky if you need to cancel...

MS will split reservations that span UYs in to two reservations and link them together. The resort will see the two reservations as a 'continuing stay' and you would not need to check-out between the two segments.

The on-line reservation system will not allow you to book a reservation that spans UYs.

So, does this mean that if I were to call before Nov. 1, I would only be able to book the first part of the trip, since the second part of the reservation wouldn't begin until Oct. 1? Or does MS somehow override that rule since it would be a continuing stay? Sorry to be so obtuse but this is the first time that I've tried this.

You would be able to book up to 7 night on one call at the 11 month window even if the reservation spans UYs.

I agree with the rest of the info but would add that as stated, you'd have to have the points in the correct UY to reserve. Each day is counted as a separate reservation from a points standpoint for DVC. Think of your stay as 2 reservations, one in Sept 2013 and one in Oct, 2013. For example, if you wanted to stay a week that spanned 1 Oct, say dates of 27 Sept to 4 Oct, you'd need the points in the Sept 2012 UY for 27-30 Sept (4 nights finishing 1 Oct) and in the 2013 UY for the 3 nights checking out 4 Oct. This means the points have to be banked to make the 2013 UY reservation. If you're doing this ahead of your banking window, MS can do all of this as part of the reservation process and you really don't need to worry about it but it does become a problem if you have to change or reserve less than 4 months from end of UY or if you wait list an option that is a different amount of points.

Thank you for the detailed information. I kind of expected that I would need to move some points around to get it done. The 2011 points have already been banked (that had to be done back in May) and they have to be used by Oct 2013.

I'll probably need to borrow a couple of points from Oct 2013 to complete the first part of the reservation. And I will need to borrow points from Oct 2014 into my Oct 2013 UY to pay for the second part of the reservation. Would Member Services be able to do all of that when I call to make the reservation or will I have to call ahead of time to borrow the points into the UY I need them to be in?

You're very welcome. It gets a little technical and confusing at times but the details are ultimately important. As long as you're ahead of your banking window and don't plan to waitlist another option, you should be OK so don't try to micromanage your points. They will borrow your 2013 points into 2012 to complete the reservation days that START in Sept. If you can make the reservation, you can always borrow the next years points so you should be OK. Just double check all your points afterwards to be sure all is correct.

Your issues start if you have to change or cancel later, including possible waitlists. My other nonDVC points system counts all points used on the first day of the reservation which has been a godsend on a couple of occasions allowing us to us points we wouldn't have been able to use otherwise. There are advantages and disadvantages to this method though.
