Booking excursion on own - does DCL restrict?

Ok...there is a really good deal on the dolphin swim at Chankanaab. 2 for 1. I tried to book via the reservation phone line but they wouldn't let me. She said nothing was available. However, looked online and it seems like there are plenty of choices.

Disney has a port adventure here. Do they have any deals with the place that restricts cruisers from booking on their own? I really think this sounds strange that I could book online (although may possibly have to not say I am on a cruise on the info page) but that the dolphin place would rather I book through the cruise line.

I guess I will have to choose between taking a chance at a great deal or paying a much higher price via port adventures.

Yes, cruiselines (not just Disney) can have an exclusive contract with excursion providers for booking while they are in port. If you try to book an excursion privately, they will not book you once they find out you are on a cruise ship that they have a contract with.

This doesn't happen for all excursions or in all ports.

I emailed Dolphin Discovery with some very general questions about age restrictions and whether 2 children would require 2 parents to be booked or just one. They responded by asking what cruise ship I was going to be on, even though I had mentioned nothing giving them any indication I was cruising. As soon as I was honest, I never heard back from them again.

I have no problem paying a SMALL premium to benefit the contractual relationship. What frustrates me is that the price markup is often absolutely outrageous. Online for myself and my 2 daughters we could have done the dolphin swim with a coupon code for $198 total. But....in order to do the right thing and be honest we will have to pay $374, almost twice as much.
