I would probably put highlights off as long as I could -- but only because it sounds expensive and high-maintenance. And what can I say -- I'm cheap and lazy! If we had more expendable income, I'd be okay with it.

I have an 8 year old and I'm constantly being asked for 1) a cell phone, 2) a laptop, 3) fake nails. I haven't gotten the highlights request yet, but I'm sure that's coming.

I'm trying to put all of that off until high school, if possible.

I didn't let mine till she was 16. Parents let their kids do things so young now days what do they have to look forward to. Let them stay little kids for as long as possible.

Not allowed before college.

As long as she is using my money, not allowed.

I'm confused, it appears you are the one that revived this.

But, the topic is still of interest.

My girls have gorgeous hair so both me and my hairdresser sil will refuse to let them do it. Im sure will in their late teens, but I won't take them before that.

Middle school for professional highlights ($$$$$$), but I let my six year old experiment on weekends with wash out color chalk and things like that (pink, blue, green streaks for fun).

I didnt do it. It was by a poster Annika who 's post has since been deleted.

For the record: DD is in 4th grade, if she asked for highlights , I would have no issue in letting her get them.

UGH I was 6 pages in until I noticed the dates!!!

I think 3rd grade is way too young...my daughters are 9 and 11 in 3rd and 5th grade and there would be no highlighting here...but then, they are probably the only kids without cell phones too!!

Wow yeah that is young. I can't imagine a situation in which I would let my kids until at least high school home(9th-10th) grade.
