Is the Brown Derby any Better These Days?

I used to love the Brown Derby. Then we went in 2008, and it seemed off. We were treated well, we even got free champagne for our Honeymoon. For some reason that I can't quite put a finger on, I didn't enjoy it as much It seemed that the consensus was that it was going downhill.

Has it gotten any better? It might make sense schedule wise to eat there on our upcoming trip and give it another shot, IF it's worth doing. If not, we'll go somewhere else.

I've heard some negative reviews on it recently....BUT I think we all know that everyone has different levels of what they like/dislike at Disney restaurants. Some restaurants gets regular negative reviews yet they are our favorite place to eat....while some of the ones that people rave about we've ruled out.

I would give it another try. If you enjoyed it prior to that one bad experience in 2008, maybe that was just an off night.

The Brown Derby is a favorite of ours. We ate there on our trip last month and it was excellent. My wife had the buffalo and I had the salmon.

There's no accounting for what might happen on any given night at any given place. Over the past eight or more years I have had excellent experiences every time at Brown Derby. I cannot say the same for California Grill. It has been the most consistently good dining experience I've had at WDW. If you choose to go again, I hope everything is perfect for you!

Our Ratings of Brown Derby: (7/2/2012)
. . . food price value: C
. . . food quality: C
. . . food quantity per serving: C
. . . food prep speed: B
. . . food selection: C
. . . seating quantity: C
. . . seating comfort: C
. . . eatery atmosphere: B
. . . eatery convenience: B
. . . staff friendliness: C
. . . staff attentiveness: C
. . . character interaction: n/a

NOTE: Although declared a Disney "signature" restaurant, Brown Derby
does not measure up to the classification. Although a relaxing atmosphere,
the food quality is below average. But, this is a Disney-owned eatery, and
not a true Brown Derby.

(The Brown Debry made a licensing agreement with Disney. Only one original
Brown Derby remains. In six states, there are "Brown Derby Roadhouses"
which were opened by Girves. They are no longer connected with Brown Derby
or Disney's Brown Derby.)

I've had some excellent food at Brown Derby this year - I highly recommend the duck two ways, or the spit-roasted American bison with white truffle croquettes. Also, during my last meal there (in July), I had extremely friendly and attentive service, from the host (Pete) to my server (Cheryl).

I ate there last November as a solo traveler and had a GREAT meal and service.

My reservation was for 3:15. I arrived early and checked in at 2:50. At 3:00 I was called and seated. I was place on a two top, with a great view of the main dining room. My waiter was wonderful (wish I could remember his name). He did not rush me at all. I spent an hour enjoying my whole meal. He was helpful with suggestions and was never intrusive during my meal. I live in New Orleans (and work for a restauranteur) , and we love our leisurely meals! I had the lobster bisque and the grilled salmon.

I am returning to BD on my trip next month!

I disagree that HBD doesn't measure up to the other signatures. Price wise it isn't as expensive, & the atmosphere isn't quite as nice. It has a park dress code, so that's to be expected. We think the quality of the food is on par with the other WDW owned signatures. As with all WDW run restaurants, it can be inconsistent. We find the same is true for the other signatures that accept DDP also. We've had avg. meals & excellent meals at most of them.

I think it has improved over the last few years. I also think that it serves one of the best filets in Disney.

We were there last October and it was amazing. The lamb was cooked perfectly! Oh my gosh, I still think about that lamb! We also split the Cobb Salad for an app (it was okay to me, but mom loved it) and I had the Banana White Chocolate Toffee Tower for dessert which has to be my favorite dessert in all of Disney.

We have always had great food and impeccable service. In May, I had the duck two ways and highly recommend it. Yum!

We've always had good food and good service. It's one of our favorite restaurants at WDW. We eat here a few times a year.
