I've really been enjoying your trip report! Love all the jewelry and accessories that you made. They have definitely inspired me to make some things for our upcoming cruise (we're going to be on the same November Western, I believe!)
I really like the bottle cap pirate necklaces....may have to try and create something like it for my girls. Did you create the pirate image yourself, or was it a sticker or something? I also love the hidden mickey tile pendants. I'm a lover of very subtle Mickey stuff.

About the Rainforest room...can you tell me more about what's included with a pass? I'm considering purchasing one for my mom, since we're leaving her on the ship at Grand Cayman. She's not a real "spa" person, but I would love to spoil her if she'll let me! How crowded do you think it would be on a port day? Does someone show you what amenities are available (since I wouldn't be able to go with her)?

Yes, we are on the same cruise. I will answer properly tomorrow morning. I am on late shifts at the moment and absolutely exhausted.

Right, I had some sleep and I can think straight again.

The bottle cap pirate graphics came from somebody on the Creative Disigns forum. I just posted a thread asking for 1" round Pirate medallions. I usually get my bottle cap graphics from Etsy and they just print as 1" straight away, but I had to tweak those quite a bit as they came as a Word document rather than as JPEG. I can't remember who did mine, but I know that Shadowryter has some as well so it may well pay you to post a request on her Disign thread. I can PM you the Hidden Mickey graphics if you like. They are designed to work with 1" square glass tiles.

The Rainforest Pass gives you access to the actual Tropical Rainforest room. I have hardly ever found it crowded and I think on a port day it will be positively deserted. You can either get a day pass or a length of cruise pass. The Rainforest room as 4 heated tile loungers, a heated bench along the back ball, a mild sauna, two steam rooms of varying intensity, an ice fountain, a fog shower, a tropical rain shower and a shower with jets on the side. I love the heated tile loungers and the mild sauna. The steam rooms are a little intense for me. The locker rooms also have a lounge area with nice comfortable day beds and a proper sauna. They are free to use for anybody. On embarkation day, they do spa tours and I would recommend that you do one of those with your mom and advise your guide that you are particularly interested in the Rainforest Room.

Yes, please! I will have to figure out how to make those. My girls and I actually made quite a few bottle cap magnets/necklaces for the holidays last year, so I still have the supplies for that. I didn't realize you could buy downloadable images for them on Etsy! I guess you can buy everything on Etsy.

I will try and do that with her (although I know how hectic things are on embarkation day!). I thought I read somewhere that you now can only buy day passes online beforehand, so I guess I will take a chance and buy her one and then take her there and show her around that first day.

Do you know if the locker rooms have "regular" (non tub/shower combo) showers? Are they kind of like an athletic facility's showers with curtains or a door? Because I was thinking that my mom might actually find it more comfortable to shower there than having to step in a tub in the stateroom. I believe we're midships on deck 8, so she wouldn't have far to go!

I will PM you the Hidden Mickey graphics shortly. I think it is only on the two new ships that you can no longer purchase the day passes.

Yes, the locker rooms have standard showers with curtains. I use the showers in the locker room and I will especially do it this time as we have a split bathroom and they freak me out. The water pressure is much better up in the spa as well. It is a while since I have been on the Magic so this may have changed, but the last time one shower had a rain shower head and one had a shower head that kind of gave a waterfall effect.

Day 22

When Mickey called at 7:30 that morning, we were both rested. We got up and got ready. We had a reservation for the character breakfast had Storytellers Cafe. This was one of my favourite meals last year. When we arrived at the restaurant, Brer Fox was "helping" the hosts to check in guests. He indicated that he did not have a reservation for us. I gave him my best teacher look and suddenly he found us. I realised straight away what I was up against. It looked like I found another Stitch-like character. I had never encountered Brer Fox before, but he seemed like fun. We were asked to sit down for a minute and soon we were shown to our table. Shortly afterwards, our server introduced himself. At breakfast they offer both an a la carte menu and a buffet. Last year we went with the a la carte menu, but this time we decided to give the buffet a go. It was pretty standard breakfast buffet fare, but the food was hot and tasty. Graham had some oatmeal followed by sausages, bacon scrambled eggs and toast. I went with fresh fruit followed by sausages, breakfast potatoes and omelette. We both had coffee and orange juice. Pretty much as soon as we had sat down, Dale came to visit. I just had time to get some food from the buffet before first Koda an then shortly afterwards Kenai came to visit. For a bit it looked like Chip was getting close, but then they did a parade with the kids and Chip disappeared after this. When he came back, he was at the opposite end of the restaurant. Terk came by a little later. We had already finished our breakfast and there was still no sign of Chip or Brer Fox. I was not too bothered about Chip as I have met him plenty of time, but really wanted a photo with Brer Fox. I was just about to give up when he appeared. By then the area where we were sitting had started to empty out and we got some quality time with him. This more than made up for Meeko not being there this time.

Even though we had not rushed breakfast, I was by the entrance to California Adventure by 9:15. At the DVC desk opposite the entrance I spotted one of the cast members who had been on our cruise. So I went over to say “hi”. This was her first day back at work. Once we had a brief chat, I headed over to The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure. True to form, this was yet again down for technical issues. So I headed into the other issue towards Soarin. This does normally open at 9:30, but they opened slightly ahead of time to make up for The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure being closed. A short line had formed on the entrance plaza before they allowed us to go down to the ramp, but then we were sent straight to the holding area right in front of the ride. I have done this ride so often that I can pretty accurately tell what should happen in what order and in what time frame. However, this time round it felt that we were waiting forever. When they finally let us in, they apologized and mentioned that they had a problem with the seat belts. At this time I did not really think anything about this. I had ended up in the second row and had every intention to come back to try for the first row. I was wearing flip flops and usually they ask you to just leave them on the floor. This time round the person doing the checks objected to this and asked me to put it in the net underneath the seat. I bent forward to retrieve them and the seat belt suddenly became undone. This completely freaked me out. For the whole of the ride, I was hanging on to bars on either side of the seat for dear life as I was so worried that it would become undone again. I did not enjoy it at all. There was nothing that would have convinced me to go on this ride again that day.

I headed over towards Paradise Pier. The most direct route went past all the building fences. This time it no longer felt like a building site, but more like a theme park even though the fences were still up. Once I entered Paradise Pier, I stopped and took some photos before heading to Toy Story Midway Mania. The posted waiting time was 45 minutes, but the line did not look that long. In any case, I wanted to do this at least once. So I braved the crowds. In the end the waiting time was about half what was posted. I did have a little time to take some photos while waiting. After I enjoyed the ride, I noticed a lovely room set up in the area where you return the glasses. For some reason I had never noticed this before.

When I came out of the ride, I browsed the shops in the area for a bit. I noticed that in the area across from Toy Story Midway Mania, Woody was out. I always thought that this area is just stroller parking. Anyway, I decided to get in line for a photo with Woody. It was nearly my turn when the character escort announced that Woody would go for a break, but would be back later and Buzz would be out shortly. I would have preferred a photo with Woody, but decided to hang around for a photo with Buzz. He turned up about 10 minutes later. Once I had my photo, I decided to have another go at Toy Story Midway Mania. The posted waiting time was still 45 minutes and I waited a bit longer this time, but still only about 30 minutes.

When I finished with Toy Story Midway Mania, I took a stroll along the boardwalk area of Paradise Pier. When I came up near The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure, the green army men came past. I don't know why I did not take a photo of this. I headed over to The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure, but either it was still down or it was down again. In any case, I did not get to ride it this time. I headed over to the gift shop near Ariel's Grotto in the hope that Duffy may be in his photo spot. I got plenty of photos with Duffy last year, but he was wearing his Halloween outfit then and I was rather hoping to get a photo with him in his sailor outfit. Alas, that was not to be either.

I decided to have a wander around the Pacific Wharf area. I was still living in hope that the new Ghirardelli Factory Tour and Soda Fountain may be open. Unfortunately this was not the case. They were making good progress, but it looked like they were still a little while off. By that time I was quite thirsty. I went over to Rita's Baja Blenders and had a Blue Raspberry Tropicool, which was non-alcoholic. Essentially it was a glorified Slush Puppy, but it was tasty and very refreshing. It was relatively hot and I could not believe how many people were having alcohol that early in the day. I was actually quite hungry so I headed across to the Lucky Fortune Cookery. I had a Teriyaki Beef Rice Bowl, which was very nice.

After lunch, I cut through A Bug's Land on my way to Hollywoodland. I really wanted to see Turtle Talk with Crush, which is located in the Animation Building at California Adventure. On my way in, I saw that they were offering various classes to draw characters. The next class on the schedule was Pluto. Even though I cannot draw to safe my life, this appealed to me. So I decided that Crush could wait and I would do this class. I did not have a long wait until they were starting to let people in. The seating was similar to that in a theater, but on each seat they had an oversized clipboard with a pencil and at the end of each row were piles of paper. The cast member taking the class essentially broke down the character into various shapes and lines and all over sudden it did not feel so daunting anymore. I would have to lie if I said I created a masterpiece, but the fruits of my labours actually somewhat looked like Pluto. Once I finished the class, I headed over to Turtle Talk with Crush. This was as funny as I had remembered and I was glad that I had made the effort. I browsed in a couple of shops and then I decided I had enough for the day. I took some photos on the way out and then I returned to the hotel.

Since I had spotted the Dooney and Bourke iPad case on the first day, it had never really left my mind. I decided to have a look in the hotel gift shop on the way to our room. They only had two of the iPad cases left, one of which had the perfect placement of the different elements of the design. I just knew that I had to have this. I had been given a Disney gift card by somebody on the cruise, which paid for a nice chunk of this. So I decided to just go for it. I went up to our room and collected the gift card before returning to the shop to get my iPad case. Fortunately nobody had snapped it up while I was gone. I have to say I am getting plenty of use out of this.

I decided to check out Downtown Disney for a bit. There were a lot of changes happening at the time with some shops that were there last year being closed and about to be replaced by other shops. The big Lego shop that was closed last year had now reopened and I decided to check this out. I also checked out the big World of Disney shop and the shop where they are selling all the Vinylmations. Even the Pin Trading shop did not prove any temptation. I would have been fine if I had resisted the temptation to check out Vault 28. In this shop they sell quirky Disney fashion, but also Dooney and Bourke bags. As soon as I entered the shop, I spotted a small selection of lilac handbags with purple Tinkerbells and pink hearts on it. Those bags were also the perfect size to take to work and they were significantly cheaper than other Dooney and Bourke bags that I had seen in this size. Still, I decided to resist. One of the staff realised what was going on and came over. He told me that this bag really suited me, took one of the shelf and told me to take it over to the mirror. It took every ounce of restraint that I had to hand it back to him.

At this point, I had done more than enough walking for the day. I decided to return to the hotel. As we were now strictly speaking hotel guests, we were getting daily housekeeping. As the room looked nice and tidy, I decided to take the opportunity to take some photos of the room. I have to say I prefer the two bed set up to the bed and sleeper sofa. This is another reason why Old Key West is such a good fit for us as it has two beds in every studio. Once I had taken my photos, I just settled down with my book for a bit.

At around 17:30 I figured that it probably should be safe enough to head down to the pool. Graham had warned me that the afternoons are very busy at the pools. I left a note for Graham where I was as he was out exploring somewhere and I had no idea when he would be back. When I got to the pool area, there were still a fair few people around, but not to the point that it felt crowded. The feature pool with the water slide was the busiest. There were also some families with kids in the Mariposa Pool, but they all kept out of my way when they realised that I intended to do some serious swimming. After swimming for about 45 minutes, I decided to head for the hot tub. This is the largest hot tub that I have ever encountered. This can prove a bit of a challenge at times. The hot tub was not busy as such. There were only a total of 6 people in the hot tub. However 4 of them were a mother with a baby who could not have been more than 6 months old and two older children who were probably 6 and 8 years old. I could not understand how one could take a baby in a hot tub, but the baby was actually very calm and did not cause a problem. The two older kids kept leaving the hot tub and then jump back in with a big splash and tried to swim laps in the hot tub. The other person who was there left in disgust after a short while. I did not give them that satisfaction and stayed. I know that they wished me gone as the kids get staring at me. In the end, they gave up before I did and I had a few minutes of precious peace and quiet.

I went back to our room around 19:00 and there was still no sign of Graham. However, housekeeping had been and done the turndown service. I was not quite sure what had hit me. I took a shower and then took a photo. I then spend some time catching up with things online. This evening I was determined to see World of Colour. So with about 5 minutes or so to go, I went out on our balcony. The people in the room next to ours had the same idea. I think this was their first time seeing it and they were very excited. It was kind of nice sharing in their excitement. As I knew we would watch it again the next day, I took plenty of photos.

Once the show was over, I headed back inside. There was still no sign of Graham and by this time it was too late to consider dinner. I sat down and caught up with some more stuff online. Eventually around 22:00, Graham returned. He had a fantastic day. He had eaten something on the way back. He suggested that we could head down to the Hearthstone Lounge where we just would have a drink and I could have something to eat. I checked this out online and I could find no indication until when they are serving food. I did not want to go downstairs only to find out that they no longer served food. I was also pretty tired at this stage. So we called it a day.

I have a mobility impairment and usually try to shower in the locker room. Your mom will find it easier than climbing in to the tub AND the shower curtain doesn't wrap around you! Lots of lovely towels, & robes & water slippers are in the lockers or can be had from the staff.

If you ever get the chance to see World of Color, grab it with both hands. It is an absolutely amazing show.

As this is rapidly heading towards its conclusion with only one full day and our travelling day to come, I decided to start a pre-trip report for our next trip. It can be found here if you are interested:
