My sons and I are all on the family plan with AT&T and we haven't bought a phone in 8 years but upgrade every 2 years. Best Buy has such great prices, that they can do because of the quantity sold. You might find the exact phone you want for free or really cheap.
Go to Best buy and check out what they have for free. My son is waiting for a few weeks because he was told by one of the salepeople that when the Iphone 5 comes out they will have the 4S for $49.00. He will definately pay that. My other son got the same phone a few months ago at Best Buy for free because he is in the military and the Best buy in GA offered good deals for the guys who just graduated boot camp.
I have an android HTC and love it but would love to have "Siri" that phone is so cool (4S). My phone is only 8 megapixel camera so the photos are not as good as some other phones I have seeen.
My third son is going tomorrow to get the android with the 12 megapixel camera since his upgrade is now. They are free with 2 year contract.
So check out Best Buy and see what they have first before signing with Verizon where you will be paying full price.
My mother named me Margaret, but I answer to "Fiesta Margarita"

I have had the Samsung Galaxy S (1st one) for 2 years now and I really do like it. A friend at work has the new III and it seems like an awesome phone. I am however an apple girl so I just pre-ordered the iphone5 and I'm hoping that I don't hate it like some of the stories I've read here. DH and 2 of my DDs have the 4 and 4S so I have played with it and I have to say that the android is definetely more sophisticated. One of the things about the iPhone that you hear a lot is how user friendly it is, well I think that's true but it is also more simplistic to use which can be a negative. The android can be more complicated to get used to but better once you get it down.
Good Luck!! I think they are both good and I'm sure you will end up with a great new phone.

Android fan here...

I'm not going to try to sway you either way, however DH and I have droids - and we love ours. Our carrier is TMobile, and to be totally honest, if they offered an IPhone when we upgraded to "smartphones" last year, I probably would have went with one since we have IPods and the kids have ITouches, and those are super. We purchased HTC Glacier phones and over the course of the last 14 months, I have only had to remove my battery once because the screen froze - my DH (same model) has never had to remove the battery on his.

There was definitely a learning curve to the Droids, and I'm no techie, but it was very easy to learn - even without referring to the on-phone manual app. I thought I would miss my ITunes (that I have on my PC and laptop), and really think Apple should get with the program and offer an android ITunes app, but since they don't - they are losing money on songs from me. Amazon has an awesome app for songs that can VERY EASILY be transferred from phone to PC, and then played in ITunes - and many are cheaper than on ITunes. I think the Siri feature would be super - but think the Android OS will come up with something like it in the future. I use my phone as a mini-computer, read on it (Amazon Kindle), print pics from the phone to CVS, play games against my sister who lives on the opposite coast, and random people who live all over the place, play songs through Pandora and Amazon through the Bluetooth player in my car, talk-to-text, swipe-to-text, heck - sometimes I even make a call on it, LOL

I'm really glad that we were not able to get IPhones when we upgraded last year, because we never would have known how great a Droid was. I definitely won't be lining up to buy an IPhone 5 (or 4, 3,2,1,) anytime soon. Both of my kids will be getting new phones for Christmas as they have outgrown our hand-me-downs, and both will be getting Droids.

I ended up getting the Samsung Galaxy 3, got a good deal at Sam's Club for $148 with my two year contract extension. Yes, there's a bit of a learning curve, but that's mostly because I had never had a smartphone before. But I'm very happy with it thus far. The screen is fantastic, large but not too huge, and the battery life isn't too shabby. With fairly light use, I can go two days without having to charge it. Of course the more apps you use, the more it's going to drain. Perfect way to solve that is an app killer, and then the battery life is even better.

One thing I found very interesting. When conversing with the guy who was getting me all set up, I asked him so basic questions about his opinion regarding the Android platform vs the iPhone. He said he'd never go for an iPhone over a Droid. He was emphatic about that. And this is a guy that sells both phones, and works with both phones. I already had made my mind up about going with the Galaxy, but his comments just helped solidify that for me.

Another cool thing about the iPhones... other than the fact they are Apple and that makes them nice and user friendly already is the fact it will easy to find accessories and stuff.

I have heard however the adapter cable size is probably going to change, which will render the old cords and adapters useless. I am sure it will not take long for a new set of stuff that is "iPhone 5 friendly" to become available.
Yeah, but in Samsung and LG's defense, they use the "Micro USB" for both data link/recharging (Unlike Apple's proprietary devices, the Micro USB is the most common adapter in the world -- bet you have one or two lying-around the house).

That's my big criticism of Apple -- they stick you with this manufacturer-unique power/data cord and force you to buy all these aftermarket accessories, and now, with the release of the iPhone 5, you have to "adapt" to a new generation of cords...
