Day 2 Wrap-up - Solo mission!

I wanted to post this last update on Day 2, sorry for the very few pictures, I had my camera, but while the little Point and Shoot takes some nice day-time shots, it has an awful time at night - I mostly had to take night shots with my phone.

So, I came in, changed my clothes, and turned around and went back out to the park. When I am on my own, I walked very fast, and dodge the crowd, and as I’m walking, I notice two other people pacing me and dodging very similar to how I do. I started talking to them, and they were a dad and his (grown) daughter that were heading back to the park for some thrill rides leaving the rest of the family at the hotel. Well, I happen to have 3 FP for Space M. and BTMRR and I really only needed one, so I offered them the two extra FPs. (I tossed the Autotopia FPs.) I hope they got to use them, as they went to Star Tours while I headed directly to Space M. The line was so short though, my FP got me no real advantage, and still had about a 10 minute wait.

OK – let me tell you right now, if there is ever any debate about whether a ride is “better” at DL or WDW, this is one thing that there is no debate about – Space Mountain at DL utterly BLOWS AWAY the one at WDW. Why? The track is smoother, and it is faster. It is not the herky-jerky of the “Wild Mouse” style track, but a very smooth rocket ride. And I think here’s where it kills it – there is a space music soundtrack blasting in your ears such that you hear ZERO track noise. It all combines to make you feel like you are actually flying through space. It is fantastic! However, I realized that DD would not like it at all, so I was very happy I was able to ride it myself. DW might not even like it, so I decided another ride would have to wait for the 2013 trip, but I will get at least 2 shots at it on that trip!
When this was over, it was time for the fireworks. I tried to take some pictures, but my little point-and-shoot can’t handle fireworks (even though it has a ‘fireworks’ mode, what’s up with that). My phone actually take slightly better pictures.

The shows not bad, but it’s not Wishes either. (The tiny castle kind of kills the effect.) Impressively, both Tinkerbell and Dumbo at one point fly from the Matterhorn, and actually circle around the castle. However, the rest was just all right – maybe there’s a better vantage point for this here than in the hub? Anyone have a recommendation?

Post that, I had to ride on Big Thunder Mountain and use my other FP. This did skip me ahead of a few folks, and I was on the ride in 5 minutes. I was getting pretty tired (remember it was 10 PM but I was only on my first full day in California and we had gotten up at 5:30 AM), but decided since DD was refusing Haunted Mansion, I decided to ride it to tell her if there was any difference. Truthfully, if anything, there’s a scene or two missing from Florida, it definitely felt shorter, that’s for sure. Even telling her that, we never did get her to ride it, though. Again, I told my wife she wasn’t missing much, and we would catch it next June.

After that, a part of me wanted to keep going, but I told myself “give it up” and I headed back to the hotel. The sum total of my day – 23 rides/attractions (with the DLRR ridden twice) on a day where we also went back to the hotel twice AND I didn’t stay until park closing (which was midnight). DD and DW only did 20 rides/attractions, having done 17 by 2 PM. Here’s a list of the things in DL I think I didn’t do: Snow White, King Arthur’s Carousel, Gadget GO Coaster, Autotopia, Monorail, Star Tours, Innoventions, Great Moments w/ Lincoln, Tarzans Tree House, Columbia/Mark Twain/Canoes/Tom Saywer Island, & Fantasmic!

While we would cover a few of these on our third day, a few things we didn’t ever get to. The biggest one being Fantasmic! Well, we decided to save this for our BSM trip. For one, none of us are huge Fantasmic fans, me being probably the biggest. For another, it seems like to get a decent seat for the show, you have to get there several hours in advance….well I’m sorry, not gonna do that. The BSM trip, you get reserved seating for Fantasmic!

Anyways, one day at Disneyland down…next up California Adventure and Carsland!

Loving the details!

And DD's, they can be a challenge cant they? Mine was very much like that - although she is 17 now, so if she doesnt want to participate she doesnt have to - but she still manages to determine everyones mood.

Boys are so much more easy going!

That's a lot of rides in one day. Glad that you managed to "pay forward" those FPs to someone else who might have used them.

Looking forward to carsland.

I love Splash Mountain, but even I don't like getting soaked on there! Especially in California where the temperature drops so much after the sun goes down. I don't like being wet & cold!

Sorry DD was giving you trouble riding things. Hopefully she was more cooperative on your DCA/Carsland day!

The Mickey shaped beignets look awesome!! Now you have me craving some fresh Cafe du Monde beignets...

Ugh, "challenge" is a good term! Pain in the butt is a better one!

I always try to "pay forward" unused FPs. Unfortunately with the new FP structure at WDW, we are less likely to have leftovers but it may still happen occasionally. Half the time you try and give them away and people don't want them. The other hard part is finding another three-some.

I'll give you a sneak preview - she was much WORSE the rest of the day. I really think Indiana Jones scared her badly. The funny thing was SHE insisted on riding that one.

Yeah, it was getting near nightfall, and we were not dressed for being wet. You also had the early rise and the time change to consider (it was 8 PM in California, but our first day there, internal clocks still said 11 PM!)

Yup, and these beignets tasted really good! I always thought the ones at POFQ weren't quite right. We can't drive down and get them like you can! (No beignets in upstate New York!)

Day 3 - CARSLAND!

It was two years ago that we set the dates for this trip, not having any idea that Carsland/Buena Vista Street would be opening a mere 5 weeks before our trip. There was a part of me that was sort of annoyed at the timing. Everything we were seeing would be new to us, we didn’t need this new thing making our trip more difficult. But, in the end, I was glad to be able to see it.

Because of the opening though – every day at DCA there was some group of people (APs or Resort Guests) that could get into the park earlier than we could. Because of this, we had to go with a rather unique strategy. From what I had read, the park gates were opening to the GP about 7:40 AM, while other guests already in the park were able to start the FP line at 7:30 AM. At park opening (8 AM), there was typically already an hour+ wait for Radiator Springs Racers, so the only alternative to a long line for the ride was a long line for a FP. So, the strategy was that I would get in line for the FP, and when the park actually opened, DW and DD would go and get in line for Luigi’s Flying Tires. If I got through the FP line and they were still in line, I would then try and join them.

So, we got over there right at 7:30 AM, and we were still getting ourselves organized and they opened the gate. Wouldn’t you know it, we got in line behind a family that stopped for like 2-3 minutes to ask the CM at the gate all kinds of questions. “I Choose to be amused” most of the time, but NOT at ROPE DROP!!! Finally they went through and I got immediately in line for the FP. (DW went trying to get a Birthday Pin, as she never was able to get one the day before.) DD came with me, but once DW found us, the two of them sat and DW ate her breakfast. I was easily about 400-500 people deep in the line at the 7:40 AM mark, and there were several hundreds more behind me once the line started moving at 8 AM. DD and DW went over to Carsland, while I chatted with the gentleman in front and the couple behind me. Turned out the woman in the group behind me was a regular DISer on the California side – “PInkBudgie”. I don’t think she’s joined in the TR, but a quick “Hello” anyways, as she is the only DISer that we ran into on this trip. Had some nice conversations about DL versus WDW, and the gentlemen in front of us had a daughter who worked character M&Gs in Florida.

Anyways, it was about 20 minutes after the line started moving that we went past the Carthay Circle restaurant, and around past Grizzly Peak…

… to the FP location for It’s Tough to Be a Bug where they were handing out FPs (good strategy). Really we couldn’t have done too badly, as we got a return time between 11:20 AM and 12:20 PM. (FP were typically out by just after 9 AM.) I then headed into Carsland.
The first thing to note about Carsland – it really is beautifully themed to Radiator Springs, but being new it is very crowded, and actually quite small, at least from an accessible standpoint. (RSR must take up ¾ of the footprint.) DW & DD were well through the line. Now normally I am not one to play “catch up” in a queue, but I made an exception in this case, especially since I would not take any extra “space” on the ride – we would still only occupy 1 tire. I explained to the CM at the front that my wife was in line with DD, and after calling her determined they were already nearing the point where you get on the ride. The CM suggested that I go to the exit queue, and then when they reach the ride, they would let me join my party. This worked out pretty well, really. Here’s my view from the exit queue:

For those that don’t know it, this ride is similar in design to the old “Flying Saucers” ride at DL in the sixties – which was ripped out after 6 years because, well, it kinda sucked. Basically each “tire” is a giant air-hockey puck that you sit on, and you have to lean your body (or bodies if there are more than one) in the direction you want to move. Imagine bumper cars where you can’t really steer them very well. Yeah, that’s the ride. They added some giant balls to the ride to make it more entertaining / distract from the fact you can’t really move very far.

They’ve since removed the balls – so these pictures will be truly “vintage” some day as in “remember when they put giant beach balls on the flying tires to make it so it didn’t suck?” OK, that’s an exaggeration, we were actually laughing quite a bit on the ride because it was so silly to ride. But, overall, I don’t think I would ride it again unless the line was less than 10 minutes long, which maybe someday it will be, but not for a while. The best part of the ride was Luigi’s (Tony Shaloub) vocals.
We next headed up the street to “Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree”, first passing the “Cozy Cone” Motel:

The detail of the theming was just amazing, but especially at the cozy cone. That they would put so much detail into an area that’s basically a snack stand is very impressive. Past that was Mater’s place.

One thing I really liked about the queue area for Mater’s, it had a ton of Junkyard artifacts that were lifted from the “Mater’s Tall Tales” shorts that came out in the years between Cars and Cars 2. These shorts are all cute and witty, but sort of inconsequential, with Mater spinning tales to his friends in radiator springs. Tales such as “Mater the Greater” where he becomes a stunt car:

Or “Heavy Metal Mater” where his band becomes rock stars:

The black-and-white noir “Mater P.I”:

“El Materdor”, where he becomes a, well, Matador.

And the one where he meets an Alien (ship) from Area 51:

This made the 20 minutes or so we waited in line go by a little faster. The ride itself is a variation on the tea-cups with a little bit of a “Whip” ride combined. There are three interlocking rings of “tractors” that you ride in the back of, and as they go around the circles they switch from one to the other, and on the change of direction you get a little bit of the “whip” portion. As we were waiting to enter the ride, I spotted 3 CMs trying out the ride. I thought this was funny, so snapped a picture:

Overall, I think this was a VERY successful ride. It took a somewhat old standby, and put a little different spin on it. It’s fast enough to get little kids (and parents) a bit of a thrill, but not enough to make you sick. Even something I would be willing to wait in line for again someday. (But NOT today!)

After this I made us move on out of Carsland. My feeling was we would have plenty of time later for shopping….MUST RIDE RIDES!

Good strategy for attacking Cars Land. We never did attempt that FP line, it was always crazy long whenever we saw it. Much easier for the 2 of us to go through the Single Rider line! That was the best thing about our trip being adults only.

I didn't understand the queue at Mater's, so your explanation makes it much more interesting! I have never been that big of a Cars fan, so I have never seen most of those shorts. Guess I should have done more research before experiencing Cars Land.

Having a boy, it's probably only a matter of time until you WILL be into Cars (being a Disney junkie and all). Our DD is actually as much into boy things and girl things. (She also loves Tangled and Princess & the Frog.) As I've mentioned before, I think the first movie is much better than its reputation. The second one is entertaining, with tons of Pixar "in jokes" (I got a real kick out of the Lasstyre adds.), but not real rewatchable in my view. (Actually, the very best thing about Cars 2 is the Toy Story short "Hawaiian Vaction", which made me laugh more in 6 minutes than Cars 2 did in 90.)

The Mater shorts are sometimes very funny, but rather repetitive if you watch them all together. However, I recommend you check out "Time-Travel Mater" on U-tube, and you'll see some references in there that are VERY specific to Carsland. (They aren't in either of the movies.)

Day 3

So, we headed next door to:

OK – why in the world would we waste prime rider time in Bug’s Land you ask? Well, I KNEW DD would love this area. (She still is really into Kiddie rides much more than “thrill” rides, with the problem being that our local amusement park says she’s too big to ride them anymore.) And since I knew lines would get longer as the day went on, and that these rides would be SO boring to me, I figured let’s get this out of the way while at least the lines are short. So – there are 4 rides here, her favorite of which was the “Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train” (yes, this is the level of rides my DD likes). The worst wait was for the “Tuck and Roll bumper cars”, which took about 20 minutes to get on, started for about 3 minutes, then got “stuck”, had to be reset while we sat in the cars, and then we had to ride it AGAIN.

While this is a great land for the little ones, I can see where this type of design really turned off Disney purists. These super simple carnival rides with a “Bugs Life” overlay are not remotely interesting, and if you are older than 7 probably not worth your time. (Unless you are our daughter, who will probably be happy to ride these things until she’s 15.) The other two rides were FLik’s Flyers and Francis Ladybug Spin or something or other. I left DD and DW to ride that one while I went to get FP for Grizzly River Run – though I knew it was futile to get these after the Splash Mountain experience from the day before.
Next up, we wound our way around Hollywood Boulevard to check out a ride we were all excited to try:

DD has recently been really into this movie, and I really like it to, think it’s one of the funnier Pixar efforts. Only half-heartedly excited about the sequel, especially being a pre-quel I feel like there will be little chance of greatness out of it. (I had picked up Cars 2 before our trip, and while it wasn’t as bad as criticism made it out to be, it was probably the most hollow of Pixar films to date. And this is coming for the rare adult that really likes Cars, as I feel that movie perfectly captured what the story was trying to say, which is that “life is about the little things/time spent with friends and family”. Cars 2 had none of that charm, but it was pretty fun. I sort of picture that Monsters University is going to fall to that level. But I digress.)
Anyways, this ride had about a 15 minute wait, but again the queue was pretty effective at keeping us entertained. I especially like the detailed “Harry Hausen’s” menu:

When we got to the front, one of the CM noticed DWs birthday button, and the one CM told the other they had to sing Happy Birthday, and the crowd picked up on it and the whole line started singing. It was a great little moment, but even better, at the end of the ride, the Animatronic Roz “I’m Watching you!” wished DW a Happy Birthday! I didn’t have the camera out at that point, but did try and take a few snaps on the ride. Only this one really came out anywhere near decent.

I really liked this one. A traditional Dark Ride style ride, that told the story of the movie, it was done in a very effective manner! The one thing I didn’t get, they’re were TVs on the side of the vehicle that as its starting off show you a small part of the story (a child loose in Monstropolis) but then they are never used again the rest of the ride. Felt like something was missing here, like these TVS were originally designed to be used throughout the ride, but then passengers found them too distracting or something...anyone know?

We next went into the Animation studio. I knew they had a drawing class here, and DW and DD both love the one at the Studios, so we gave it a try. What’s really nice about this one versus the DHS one is that they had a list showing you all the characters that were going to be drawn that day at what time. We timed it for the 11 AM drawing of Pluto! Here’s the theatre:

And here’s our sketches – first mine:

I screwed up his eyball pretty badly initially – which is why he is looking to the left like that – and why I drew a bone over there. Now DW:

Finally DD:

Big complaint versus the DHS one…there are no “desks”, you have to use a table top propped on your lap. The desks at DHS have the light underneath, so when you pencil your drawing you can use super-light drawing that is easy to trace over. Nit-picky I know…but I prefer the DHS one even without the schedule! (I think that’s why DW and DDs came out worse than usual. Me – I’m lousy no matter what my desk is like.
But, guess what…our FPs were coming due, we could finally ride Radiator Springs Racers!

Day 3 - Radiator Springs Racers

But, DD did NOT want to ride it. (She didn’t want to ride ANYTHING really today.) She put up a big stink and wouldn’t get in line. We finally had to threaten taking away her Nintendo DS, and she begrudgingly got in line. The FP line did still go by some of the interesting parts of the queue – particularly – Radiator Spring itself.

I videotaped on the ride, so no pictures, but I have to tell you, this ride was absolutely fantastic! It was really 3 rides in one, the first being a gentle cruise through the Carburetor County, the second a dark ride through the town at night, and the third a tandem version of test-track. The tech used on the animatronic cars was absolutely AMAZING! Without a doubt it was the best ride at California adventure, and while I would have a hard time putting it ahead of some of the classics, it really should be in the same breath. I can’t imagine they will wait that long to get this to Florida.

You can see from the expressions on our face how fun this ride is! After the ride was done, even DD admitted it was not the complete torture she thought it was going to be. We did a little bit of souvenir shopping in the stores around Radiator Springs. I’m bad when it comes to souvenir photos, so there aren’t any, but here’s a few pictures I took while shopping:

At Ramone’s, we picked up a copy of the Carsland soundtrack, which had originally sold out, but they had re-pressed. I also picked up some magnets to give to DISer “Princess in Oz” when we saw her. I had debated between this a few other things (coasters for one) but when we got to her house and saw her fridge covered in souvenir magnets, I knew I’d gotten it right!

At Sarge’s Surplus hut we got DD a Cars handheld video game.

And “Cola”, our future DISer friend in Sydney, had mentioned she would love a Carsland pin, so we tried all over to get one of the “Carsland Opening” pins, but we went through the whole park trying to find it, and instead had to settle for a regular “Carsland” pin, bought from the Curio shop:

DD spotted this hidden Mickey on the wall of the shop. Truthfully, I didn’t spend a lot of the trip looking for them, so this may be the only one we saw!

By now, it was almost time for our 12:30 lunch reservation at...

...oh, you are going to hvae to wait on that one!

I'm excited to take my grandson to Bugs Land .. He's 5 and not into thrill rides either. I think he'll love this !

She didn't want to ride Radiator Springs ??!! This is the whole reason we are GOING ! lol Well at least she did ride and liked it !

I'm nervous my grandson might pull this on us a few times. He's a ride chicken. But I plan on using lots of bribery and incentives.

I do admit the theming in Bug's Land is very cute and well done. There is also a splash area that little ones can get wet...however, I recommend a change of clothes if they go in there! We had no problem keeping DD out (or at least dry) after the Splash Mountain fiasco the day before!

Bribery and threats (take away her DS) was our only Ammo. There are some loud bits in the inside part of RSR with Mater and Frank (the combine/thresher) but it is not overly scary. I think she enjoyed it, but she didn't want to ride it again.

Nice sketch!

And thanks again for the magnets. Everytime I open the fridge, I see it and think of our DisMeet. You definitely got that one right.

Shame about DD having her 'moments' over the ride. But it looks like you all had a great time afterall.

Oh it was our pleasure. We had a really great time that evening.

It just occurred to me I can "cheat" and use your photo to show the magnets:

DD was SOOOO frustrating on the last 2 days. Both of us wanted nothing more than to tell her..."the heck with you...we're coming back next year without you, ya stinker!" but we refrained. We don't feel bad about taking a vacation without her, but feel slightly bad about leaving her home from Disney, but when I feel guilty, I will think back to this trip and say..."NO!" just like she did 286 times.
