Talking Talk about a bad breakup. Jeez

We had a major security scare here at the Philadelphia airport today. Turned out to be a hoax.

Boy meets girl, man breaks up with girl, buys a plane ticket to Houston, girlfriend gets new boyfriend to call the airport and say boy is on plane with liquid explosives.
Plane turns around in midflight for emergency landing. Swat, Philly police and FBI are there, Man is pulled off of plane in cuffs. bomb sniffing dog and the entire 9 yards.

What happened to the good old days where you just spread the rumor that he was lousy in the sack.

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?se...cal&id=8799879

Police say it was approximately 7:30 a.m. Thursday when a call was received at Philadelphia police airport headquarters from a person stating that a specific individual would attempt to get past TSA and board a flight to somewhere in Texas with a dangerous and hazardous substance.

"It was alleged that a male, and a name was given, would attempt to get onto an airplane en route somewhere in Texas with a dangerous or hazardous substance," Sullivan said.

Police say that information was immediately given to the FBI and TSA. It was then confirmed that the man identified in the tip call was on US Airways flight 1267 that had already departed at 7:39 a.m. to Dallas.

The decision was made jointly by police, FBI and US Airways to order the Airbus A-319 to return to the airport.

US Airways flight 1267 arrived back in Philadelphia where Philadelphia SWAT, bomb technicians, and FBI agents stormed the plane and removed the passenger, identified as Christopher Shell.

He was handcuffed and placed on the tarmac.

Shell was then transferred into FBI custody and removed from the scene for further questioning. He was later released.

Bethlehem native Mathew Pirozzi was on his way to a golf trip in Texas when the flight was interrupted and federal agents stormed on the plane.

"Midway down the plane, they found the passenger and they drew weapons on him, got him out of his seat and got him off the plane rather quickly," Pirozzi said.

Bomb technicians and bomb sniffing dogs conducted a search of the plane and, around 9:30 a.m., the all-clear was given.

Passengers were taken off the plane and bused to the terminal where they caught other flights to their destinations.

The FBI, in conjunction with police, quickly went to work trying to identify who made the call about possible explosives on the plane.

Sources say it appears the boyfriend of the Shell's former girlfriend is behind the nefarious prank. He is now facing serious federal charges and years behind bars.

"Look at the resources that were expended and the delays to the passengers, the expense the agencies involved, and to the airport authorities," Richard Quinn of the FBI said.

Wow...overreact much. I hope the girl and her new BF have to pay for all the expenses I'm sure were incurred by the airline and security and probably even other passengers but somehow I doubt it. What seems a little stupid is they make you throw out your liquids and go through a body scanner and take off your shoes and all the rest of it and they still thought it could be true and this guy might have a bomb. You'd think with all the security you go through it would be impossible to bring a bomb on board.

OK, so what should officials have done? Simply said "no one can get anything by us"?

While I agree it sounds like too much, I think TSA & FBI were caught between a rock and a hard place. If they turn the plane around, they're accused of over reacting. If they don't turn the plane around and the tip is accurate...

My only suggestion would be to land the plane at a more out of the way location. But I don't know if that would be doable (based on size of plane & runway length).

I saw that on the news this morning. I'm glad they got they guy who called it in. I feel so bad for the passengers, especially the one who was handcuffed. The ex-girlfriend seems to have gotten a real winner with her new boyfriend.

And just supposed this *was* a case of some terrorist sneaking an explosive on board. Suppose the plane blew up? The entire USA would have been enraged if the FBI hadn't acted on that tip. Remember, there was a time when no one could imagine someone would try to sneak an explosive onto a plan in his shoe or his underwear.

I think they should throw the book at the guy who did it. And the ex-girlfriend if she was an accessory. Sure, he made a foolish mistake, but where it comes to potential terrorism the US cannot turn a blind eye. This is not a hand slapping offense. Nothing short of incarceration for a year or two will be enough.

I'll bet shortly after this hit the news, lawyers were salivating at Mathew Pirozzi's door. Lawsuits, here they come.
The plot thickens. Guess he won't be using those lawyers afterall, at least not to sue...

DALLAS (AP) — A man caught up in a midair explosives hoax that forced his Dallas-bound plane to return to Philadelphia was arrested on outstanding warrants when the plane eventually arrived in Texas.

Philadelphia resident Christopher Shell was flying home to Texas on Thursday to celebrate his 29th birthday with family and friends when the flight turned around.

Upon landing, he was escorted away at gunpoint by law enforcement. Philadelphia police say they'd received a call alleging he was carrying a dangerous substance but later determined it was a hoax, insisting Shell did nothing wrong.

But at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Shell was arrested on outstanding warrants. Airport spokesman David Magana says the warrants are from North Texas law enforcement agencies but declined further comment.

Phone messages to Shell weren't immediately returned

OK, so this girl isn't so good at picking boyfriends, huh?

I don't know what the ex-BF's other legal issues are, but unless they involve terrorist activities of some sort, then he really is, in THIS case, the victim.

Not saying the ex-BF is a choirboy...obviously not with outstanding arrests...but the new BF really messed up with this false report & ALL that it entailed...turning the plane around, the law enforcement intervention required, federal offense since it involved an airplane and all....not good on his part.

As far as the airline officials/FBI....they had no choice other than to do what they did. They couldn't take the risk that it was a hoax.

I seriously doubt it because Matthew was just a passenger on the plane who witnessed the arrest. Christopher, however may very well have a case, despite his own apparent legal troubles.

His warrants have no bearing on the reality that he was deliberately targeted by his ex's new boyfriend and accused of domestic terrorism, dragged off a plane, detained and interrogated. His own history may make a jury less sympathetic to him, but it does not negate that in this incident he was the victim of a vindictive prank designed to harm him.
