Poison oak! Help

Doing some yard work I managed to get some poison oak between two fingers, on the back and top palm of my hand.

I tried a Benadryl anti itch gel, it burned and I had to wash it off. Dh said but it didn't itch, did it!

I'm using a generic calamine lotion now and it is still very uncomfortable, itchy and sore.

Is there anything else I can do?
How long until it goes away?

Ahhhhhhhh.

DH got into some poison ivy while working a crop insurance claim last month. He asked at the pharmacy what was the best thing for it, and was told just an anti-itch cream or Calamine lotion but basically it just has to "run its course." He didn't have a bad case of it thankfully, but it did itch for at least a week. Sorry you're itchy.

Try taking a dose or two(back to back) of oral Benedryl instead of topical. And,it's the swelling that makes the majority of the itching. I'd apply a cold compress for about 20 minutes out of each hour. With hands, that could be holding your hand in cold water. Even ibuprofen might help with the swelling. Can't hurt to try a couple doses; best to do at least back to back doses to see if it helps because just one dose doesn't always keep the swelling down.

I was down for two weeks with poison oak! I had it all over my body. Ended up going to urgent care for prednisone. Take benedryl and use calamine. Cold compresses.

DH gets poison ivy by just looking at it He uses an OTC cream called Zanfel. I think it can be used for poison oak as well. It is expensive, I think a tube was $40 but it was such a relief. It washes away the oils which is what causes the itching. It also may be behind the counter at the pharmacy but you do not need an Rx, it just gets shoplifted a lot.
