arghhh
I just read this thread and I'd never looked at military rates before- fiance is veteran marine though. so I just checked and it says can book thru Sept 2nd? REALLY? I barely missed it..... what a bummer LOL

well wait that's thru Dec 2012. so I wonder when they might offer military rates for 2013? do y'all check daily to find out when or is it usually like this one a few days in the middle of the year that you can book military rate cruises?

No MTO rates for December out of Galveston. I think I saw an MTO rate for the beginning of December on the Mexican Riviera cruise out of LA. Don't depend on what DCL posts under specials for military discounts. It is often not up to date and sometimes does not include all eligible cruises. The discounts can be very random and if you are looking to sail a few months out or already have a cruise booked and are eligible for a military discount, check frequently on your own by plugging in the code.

I have found that the DCL site does not always update their "Special Offers" page with all the dates for the military rates. I have found the rates sometimes just by trial and error (trying all sorts of different ports/dates/ships with the MTO code). I wish they had a better search engine so that you could just input the MTO code and see everything that is out there.

The rate for our Nov cruise out of Galveston was something like 66% off. I checked back and it beat a KSF offer that we used last year to go to Alaska. *And* we have a verandah.

I watch these all the time. We sailed the Med last summer 7/11 with an MTO. The trend I have seen is they offer a discount once the PIF date has passed for a particular sailing. I feel certain it's based on how well the cruise is selling.

They do not always offer them of course. Last spring they were offered on the first few Alaska sailings but then none were offered for Alaska during June, July or August.

And I find as others have said it's almost easier to just plug in MTO in the search on their site and see what comes up because they don't always update the offers page. I also read and found to be true that they update on Tuesdays with new offers. But I literally watched the special offers page daily when waiting for the Med discount last summer and sure enough it the Tuesday the week after the PIF date.

Good luck! Those current Galveston discounts are insane! I wish we were closer to Texas! My fingers are crossed for next year July Med dates. But who knows!

I tried to call DCL about this but was on hold forever. I figured maybe people here already knew. I was just going to ask them.. on their website it says retired or active military- are they strict on that? I mean what if your'e not 'reitred' but not active? what if you're a 10yr multiple war veteran? That doesn't count for anything on the discount rate? Just if retired or still active? *fingers crossed that isn't the case* LMK

Used to be that you could apply the military rate after the penalty period without rebooking, but that's not true any longer. Now it's a cancellation and rebooking. Only the Florida resident rate can still be applied after the penalty date.

No, veterans don't qualify for the discount. Must be active or retired military or a current/retired employee of DoD.

Even through the DCL website may state that MTO bookings are available for a specified period, I've checked the rates after the expiration date and the military discount fares were still available.

I booked VGT about 30% off prevailing rates but later noticed that there was an MTO discount that would have been 50% off... bummer but still got a great deal. I think the military fares were sold out approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the sail date.

Also, I recall seeing on the website that discounted fares may be available on cruises other than those listed, so it wouldn't hurt to call and ask about another particular cruise.

Awww what a bummer. So either you serving right now- even if it's just a few weeks or a month or something- or you served long enough to retire. But those that served a decade thru wars- you don't get any discount. Not cool. guess his service means nothing to them
(what is DoD?)

DoD Is Department of Defense. The military thing is always a tricky confusing one for us. DH is not active duty nor is he retired - but he is inactive reserves with ID and thus qualifies for the discount. It always confuses me!

Out of Galveston, the military rate was only Sep, Oct and Nov.

Does anyone know what the odds would be on getting an MTO rate for March 1st? If I thought my chances were good, I'd just wait and book then.

Where is a crystal ball when you need one?!

Hmmm inactive reserves huh. I thought they'd have to be active reserve also.
So you can be new to the military, career military in long enough to retire, or inactive or active reserve and get the discount- but if you served a long time but not quite enough to retire then forget you? LOL No bueno.

Well, according to DCL's website
Quote:
Activated members of the U.S. National Guard or the U.S. Army Reserve must also show active duty orders (active duty papers must be dated as of January 1st of the previous year to qualify).
So reading that I wouldn't think inactive reserves qualify.

ETA: I know at DL and WDW they are check your ID and make sure it is valid, either active or retired. I would think DCL would have a similar procedure.

Seems like the important thing is the id, which my fiance doesn't have. He has his DD214 (or whatever it's called if I've got that worng LOL) but not a recent military id, nope.
