I am a "looper". At any point of my courses I am no farther than 1 mile from my house. My 20 miler a few of weeks ago was comprised of two 6.6 mile loops and a 7 mile loop. When I pass my house I can refuel my belt and I'm good to go. Another plus is if I start hurting I can easily be home in no time.

I don't like to do loops, but I do sometimes do out and backs, although passing my house is EXTREMELY frustrating.

I'm an out and backer. I can always convince myself to at least finish the first half before I consider quitting. Then at the half I have no choice but to run back.
I can do loops, but a double out and back often gets cut short. |

One really good thing about doing loops for me is when I am into a loop and my body starts to get tired, I know there is only a short distance to go but more often than not, when I get back to my house I'm feeling better and continue a little longer. Have had numerous 10K's turn into a 15K or a half marathon.

I'm a loop loather during a race but during a practice run I'll take it... I've run a 1 mile stretch of road 6 times in a row to get up to the mileage I needed just because it was relatively straight, lacking in traffic, flat-ishand shaded. During a race, I don't want to have to pass the finish line and keep going! I have seen running groups that go out and do long runs with water/sports drink stations set up along the way, so that might be what I need to do come fall.
The one thing that scares me about not being relatively close to home is that if that something does go wrong and starts to hurt (like it did on a run last week) I'd like to not have to walk a few miles and/or take the bus to get back. |

I do loops and out and backs, just depending on my mood and the distance. I have a 1 mile loop (my road actually), a 5K loop, a 5.5 mile loop, a 6 mile O&B, and an 8 mile O&B that combine to make long runs sometimes. It can be nice to run a mile, come home and deal with any GI issues that didn't work out pre-run and then continue on.
I try to run with a local group for most of my Sunday long runs and we always have several water stops and at least one spot on the course with gatorade that we pass at least 2 times (usually on an O&B run). Love having that stop

I am an out and back kind of girl. I am dreading the inevitable loop runs as my mileage creeps up so I can re-load on water, and also because the greenway where I do my long runs is "only" 7 miles long one way. I am hoping I have the will power to get to my car after 2 plus hours of running and turn around and keep going...

I LOVE that, I have seen a few quotes that are similar, and they always make me smile. I have had a few people message me to tell me that I inspired them to start running, and i am by no means a fast runner. It makes me feel so good when someone says something like that!

Fuel Belt-love mine, like having what I need on demand.
Loops, out and backs-I do both. For my long runs, I drive to the bike trail and start in the middle. Then I can go out and back one way, refill bottles half way through, and still have the "no way out but back the way you came" once I get going again. The trail is only 8.75 miles long, so I have to do the whole thing PLUS for my runs over 17. But its flat and partly shaded, so its ok. I do a figure 8 loop for my short runs, sometimes I can make it longer by adding another loop. Plus my neighborhood has lots of cul de sacs and half circle streets, so I have found I can add some easy mileage by just running in circles
