Bad OKW experience

We have owned DVC since 2003 and have stayed at OKW before. We knew it was the oldest DVC resort but also knew that recent renovations had been done.

We checked into our 1 bedroom unit in building 24 on 8/10/12. When we walked in the door, I immediately noticed crumbs on the kitchen floor near the island. Now, I am not a neat freak, but this upset me. I went into the bathroom to check it out because I remembered I wasn't thrilled with the bathroom on our prior trip there. The porcelain toilet bowl had a big crack in it, I initially thought it was a stain. The sink had a crack in it also, but it looked as if they had tried to repair it because sealant was smeared over it. The grout around the toilet was yellow, need I say more about that ??? I called housekeeping to request another room but was told that they were all sold out and would send someone out to clean.

I went into the kitchen and took a peek in the refrigerator. Sitting on the shelf was a 1 lb. package of gray ground beef with a sell-by date of 8/7/12! I called to report that as well.

We went to dinner and shop for groceries. We got back around 9:00 and started to unpack and put away the groceries. DH wanted some ice so he got the ice bucket and opened it. He found a candy wrapper in it!

By then I was really upset. This was supposed to be our vacation and Disney is supposed to have a certain standard. I stormed off to Hospitality House with the ice bucket in hand. The staff there did not seem too sympathetic to me, but they said they would get us another ice bucket and report this to the head of Housekeeping there.

The next day we went to EPCOT and came back in the early afternoon for a rest and a swim. When we entered our room, the Housekeeping manager was there inspecting. He apologized for what had happened there.

I hope nobody else has to deal with this stuff there! I don't think we are going to be rushing to stay there again any time soon!

Sorry to hear about your maintenance/mousekeeping issues! I, thankully have had 30+ stays at OKW and have been very fortunate with regards to housekeeping/maintenance. The worst I can report, cookie/goldfish crumbs in the sofa bed outer frame!

Hopefully they took care of your issues to your satisfaction!

I get the feeling that the CM's act like they don't care because it happens more often than it should and it has become the norm.

I would discuss the issues with the resort GM if possible. The housekeeping manager will protect the housekeepers.

You should also send a email to DVC Member Satisfaction, dvcmembersatisfactionteam@disneyvacationclub.com

I don't understand the reason for these types of problems, is it a policy issue, a budget issue, a management issue, or all three?

Bill

I am glad you did report the problems, that is the only way they will keep up their diligence when cleaning/inspecting the rooms. OKW has always been good on our stays, but if problems are to begin surfacing, as the oldest resort it will be there.

Minnielaners,

We had a bad experience a few years back. It was July and the air conditioning was not working. I had my 83 yo DM with me. We called the front desk and was assured some one would come out.

We went to the park, came back and no one had been there. Stopped by the front desk this time. No problem, some one would be out shortly. Did I mention it was July and my mother was 83? No one came. We called again and stopped by the desk again. No one came. The next morning we woke up to a flood in the hallway. They came then!!

To clean up the water, they laid the white guest towels down. Not a good idea. When the towels were picked up they were filthly, filthy black and nasty!!

I had had it!! When we checked out, I asked to speak to a manager and told him our story. I was not loud or angry and just stated the facts. I did mention I was a Disboard member and that I would let 200,000 of my closest friends know about it. He apologized. A week later he called and gave back one night of points.

I'm not in a hurry to stay again, but DH really wants to.

Unfortunately incidents similar to this have happened at every DVC resort. It is disheartening to say the least. Our stay at OKW last March had no housekeeping problems, though we did have a problem with being assigned a HA room that did not have the accommodation my DH needed (we did get the proper room the next night). While I love OKW, I dislike that the phone number you call to reach OKW housekeeping is shared with SSR (at least that is what I was told). These are both huge resorts. I think that each resort should have its own housekeeping management.
