We recently went through this with DS18 and DD20. DS is an Aspie, DD has severe anxiety, to the point that it's disabling to her.

For both of them, it took a long, long time being behind the wheel. Both of my kids sound like your son. Whenever Dh or I would tell them how a near accident situation should have been handled, they would completely shut down. There were several near accidents for both of them. I've joked with Dh that we could have more kids as long as I didn't have to teach them how to drive, it was that awful!

Sometimes the driving test does not go well, at least it did not in our case. DD failed the driving portion 3 times before she passed on the 4th. DS failed twice before he passed on the third try.

There is hope though! Once mine got their licenses and were able to drive alone, they were able to relax and did much better. We have even followed behind them to watch (with them knowing) and their driving was very good. DD has been behind the wheel, driving an average of 45 miles a day, every day, for the past two years. Not even a scratch on her car. DS has been driving a few months now, and so far, so good.

Wishing you luck
