Infomercials and youtube commercials don't compare to actual hard evidence that nothing but heavy duty chemicals, extreme heat, or extreme cold kill bedbugs. Those chemicals are illegal for use in the US now because they are so toxic. If you buy stuff to "spray around" and kill bedbugs, you are just tossing money away. We actually sprayed a heavy duty bathroom cleaner with bleach on one bedbug and it didn't kill it.

Do a bedbug check of your room before moving in. Check all drawers and the floorboards, look in pillowcases and along the inside creases of the mattresses. Keep suitcases off the floor regardless; we don't even bring in our suitcases until we do a check.

Bedbugs are an epidemic at this point, and if there was something so unbelievably simple as a spray to kill them, you can bet there'd be no epidemic. Every hotel worth their salt would have stockpiles of the spray and it would be part of the sanitation of every room. As it is, there are still tons of bedbugs; they are EXTREMELY difficult to get rid of. No spray is gonna do it. Especially not once!
I agree! I don't want bedbugs but I don't want to stay in a room that has been sprayed with chemicals...safe or not.

And when I'm at home and I spill (which is all the time) DH just looks at me and shouts "Mickey sticker"!
That is a wonderful idea! Let others make fun...you are the ones HAVING fun!

Just a note for the bed bugs. It is permethrin not pyrethrin. Permethrin is not toxic when dry.

Still does not sound like anything people should be spraying in their hotel rooms. And I'm sure no one who owns a cat would appreciate it being sprayed at all!

The items that I bring with me are not your normal travel items - I bring my own souvenirs! You can buy Disney items almost everywhere. I try to get all of our pre-vacation items on clearance. It's not that I'm cheap - I don't mind spending a small a fortune on those special souvenirs at the parks that have a purpose (watches, Christmas ornaments, etc). The real fun about shopping ahead of time is surprising my family when we get to the resort!

I start shopping once I begin planning our trip, and usually do so over a period of many months. As I mentioned, I do it secretly from my husband and daughter. My goal is to fill my daughter's "Magical Mystery Suitcase"! I always begin by purchasing Disney T-shirts for everyone at the Disney Outlet online, or if I see some at Target or in the Disney store on clearance. I buy them one for each day. It usually ends up costing a lot less than regular t-shirts because I try to shop clearance only. I tuck them aside where no one can find them!

For our trip when my daughter was five and a half, I began shopping early and accumulated a ton of Disney stickers, papers, pencils and scrapbook items. We spent a good half day in the park on our first day. My daughter was a little upset about having to leave the park...that was until told her we had a surprise for her at the room. We opened the Magical Mystery suitcase! She was surprised to see all of the character t-shirts, and her eyes lit up at all of the stickers! She was content to work on her sticker "scrapbook" each day during our down time. We saved all of our maps, receipts, napkins, paper coasters and assorted Disney trinkets each day, which she faithfully added to her scrapbook. There was no crying when we left the park all hot and tired - she was anxious to get to the room so she could add her treasures to her scrapbook.

We returned when she was ten - same deal with the t-shirts. I purchased trading pins on ebay. I got her a bunch of cheapie pins for her to trade with cast members, and I bought "special" pins that I held aside and disbursed throughout the week for specific events. I had planned a parasailing adventure for her at Sammy Duvall's Watersports behind the Contemporary. She didn't know until we checked in at the dock. I had a corresponding Minnie parasailing pin for the event! Same thing with horseback riding at Fort Wilderness - secret event and corresponding pin. I also got her a Port Orleans pin (our resort), a Polynesian pin (we had diner reservations there), well...you get the idea!

We're heading back at the end of August. She's 14 now. I bought the t-shirts already. I have pins for our events (dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table - staying at Wilderness Lodge, etc). I purchased 4 field books about Imagineering at the park (she's starting high school this year and is quite the math nerd), and a Hidden Mickey guide. Tickets go on sale this weekend for an event at the House of Blues during our trip. It's one of my husbands favorite artists. The event is appropriate for all ages so we're going as a family. I will be ordering "concert" shirts for both of them (shhh...don't tell).

The Magical Mystery suitcase has become a tradition. Other items that I have tucked in included personalized autograph books, mickey hair scrunchies, PJs, etc. I notice that we don't spend nearly as much time (or as much money) in the shops since we have all of our "new stuff" already. I enjoy all of the planning that goes into it! It adds something special to an already magical vacation!

LOVE the magical mystery suitcase. I told DH and we had to go to the Disney store today (over an hour) to start it. Lucked out with a huge sale! Plush Holley Stickwell for $3.99! This is going to save us a bundle at the parks and be fun while doing it!

My not so normal item to take: glucose tabs in case of low blood sugar (though will have to get dole whips instead) .. Also 2 lanyards DH got at various conferences: we put the photo pass where the name tag usually goes, credit card, kttw and some money in the zippered part. Its not a Disney lanyard, but I figure I can figure something out to disney-fy them

I think it may have been mentioned but I bring party favor sized bubbles and they fit perfectly in my small cross-body bag. I blow bubbles when my toddler is melting down waiting on the bus or another queue. Bonus is that is brings smiles to all of the kids around us too.

If using a digital camera, first photo should be of a piece of paper with your name and a note saying "if found, please call ..... "your cell phone number. If camera gets lost you might get lucky and get a phone call.

Not sure if anyone's posted this already but if you're doing laundry, shout color catchers are one of the best inventions ever! You can put everything together (even new stuff, just use more than one sheet in that case) and everything comes out perfectly!

Great tips everyone! Stuff that never gets unpacked from my suitcase, since I travel for work frequently: Night lights (2 small round led ones with the turnable shield, since you never know which way the plugs are pointing in a room), scissors, binder clips, clothes pins, flashlight, travel-sized manicure set, lint roller, travel Lysol spray, travel Febreeze, travel Static Guard, small power strip, moleskin, small first aid kit, and a cell phone charger (my Nook and cellphone use the same type, so one stays at home and one in the suitcase!), every size of Ziploc bags, and plastic grocery bags.

But a couple of things I haven't seen mentioned:

I never travel without Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel. Sometimes hard to find, but have had good luck finding it at Target. (It's stocked in the women's hygiene area near the Midol.) Both DH and I apply it at the start of the day, and again after our midday break. Use it anywhere you might chafe, like your upper thighs, and under my breasts. It goes on like a gel, but turns into a powder. Truly remarkable stuff!

Another must have is Gold Bond Pain Relieving Foot Cream. Quite a few of the drugstores in my area carry it. After a long day at the parks, nothing beats this! In the morning, your feet feel like doing another 10 miles, no problem! It's mentholated, so fair warning, it can be stinky, so I pack an older pair of socks to put on after the cream, and use them only for this purpose. When I pack for the trip home, I make sure to put these socks in their own special Ziploc so not to smell up the entire suitcase!
