I once wanted to swap points between reservations because there was a possibility that we would need to cancel one reservation and I wanted that reservation to be the one using bankable points. I could not do the swap until such time as we actually canceled one reservation. It makes sense, actually. There isn't a way to swap points if there are no available points to swap.
So, in my scenario, if I were booking a hard to get reservation where the morning of the 11 month booking window was imperative (and I couldn't later swap between the two times), what I should have done is, prior to my 11 month window opening on my May reservation, to book a dummy reservation for some random time that would allow me to borrow enough points into my October 2012 use year to cover the reservations; cancel that dummy reservation and switch the earlier trip to those borrowed points. That way, I would have a full complement of 2012 points with which to book my May trip when the 11 month window actually opened, so that if I end up having to cancel it, I won't be stuck with a bunch of borrowed points that can't be banked.
