We live in Orange County, and I've always wondered what it would be like to take the train up to Seattle. We have two kids, and the cost of a family sleeper car is so expensive. Do you think this trip would be doable in a non sleeper car?
Coach on Amtrak is like Business Class on an airplane. Lots of leg room, seats that recline (Not fully) with leg rest.

There is a shared observation car that's all windows.

That said, personally I wouldn't want to do it without a sleeper, as, I'm not sure how good of sleep I'd get. Plus the Pacific Parlor Car is what made the trip for us. (your mileage may very)

You'd need to make sure your kids will be happy on the train. 34 hours is a LONG trip. The "stretch and smoke breaks" at the major stations are few and far between. (I don't smoke, that's just what Amtrak called them)

Personally I might say leave the kids with Grandparents and go without and at least spring for the roomette. (however you know your family best)

And even the regular rooms are $$$$$. You have to want to take the train.

Navigators

Why you should not scan things at 4:25 when your carpool is leaving at 4:30.

Attached are links to upside down Alaskan Navigator PDFs. However, it's a quick right click to right side up them. I'll rescan tomorrow and update this post.

Loving your TR

We are going to be doing the Alaskan Cruise in June 2013 but it's never too early to get excited and plan right?

You mentioned that you stayed at the Sutton Place Hotel, how was it? is it very far to the port from the hotel?

We are going to be staying in Vancouver for a few nights pre-cruise as we have never visited before so want to do some sightseeing

Would you say it's a good location?

Sorry for so many questions!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the Navigators. I'm printing them all right now, so upside-down doesn't matter!

Sutton place is a fantastic location for the cruise. The hotel seemed very nice. We booked it on Hot Wire. (It's the 5 Star hotel on Hot Wire that says Indoor Pool)

It's 8 blocks to Canada Place and we had planned on just walking it. However, it was raining and walking 8 blocks in the rain, with luggage and an umbrella made a $10 cab ride seem easy decision.

Our room was beautiful, on the top floor. The bed was comfy and the shower was hot. That said, we arrived at 4 AM and left about 11:00, so we didn't spend too much time there. However, if Canada Place is walkable, so would GasTown area. I've only been there one time before as part of Ski trip, so this was my first summer visit and we didn't see much of the sights. But Vancouver is a beautiful city. Be sure to visit Grouse Mountain and take the tram up to the top of the mountain. (if it's clear out)

We had booked a "cancel-able back up hotel" and then about two weeks before started looking at Hotwire and Priceline. (We ruled out Priceline as if you look at the zone, it's a BIG area)

I hope this helps!

THANK YOU for the navigators!!

We are on the reverse trip (SEA to Vancouver repo) in Sept, so I am guessing these navigators will be most like what we will have, since we aren't going to Victoria.

ETA: You are right, all I had to do was open them, right click, and click on "Rotate Clockwise" twice, and it's perfect! Thanks!

I would think they would be the same. Victoria is beautiful, but we did the Mount Rainier, Seattle, Victoria vacation two years ago. Didn't need to see it again. Glad we had more time in Juneau.

Now with photos

Two important milestones happened today. (In real life, not the trip report)

1st, We've downloaded 3000+ photos onto the computer, so this report will now be with pictures.

2nd, I paid off the Visa card. Once we get to the ports, you'll know why this is "woo hoo"

So, back to #1, let's back track a few posts.....

Coast Starlight from the Parlor Car. (with champagne) Champagne will pop up in the story again latter.

Good morning Lake Shasta (this also shows the Pacific Parlor Car windows)

Snow covered Mt. Shasta

Palo Food Porn

I figured the Palo food porn deserved its own post. This will be the only food porn of the trip report. (ok, there might be something from Palo brunch, but it won't be a daily photo)

Antipasto

Beef Tenderloin "Palo"
Served with Palo Signature Barola Red Wine Sauce or Gorgonzola Sauce
(per our waiter's suggestion, replace "or" with "and")

The food porn you've been waiting for:
Palo chocolate soufflé: with vanilla bean and chocolate sauce

Great info!
Thanks so much
There is a 35% discount cancel-able rate on Sutton Place so even though it's a year away to my trip it might be worth grabbing that discount and looking again closer to the trip
Thanks again
